Would You Drink This Fruity Malt Beverage?

The Four Loko hype may have died out, but don't expect the novelty alcoholic beverage trend to disappear just yet.

The Four Loko hype may have died out, but don't expect the novelty alcoholic beverage trend to disappear just yet. Pabst Brewing Co., which also produces Colt 45, is adding another beverage to its lineup: Blast, a "premium malt beverage with natural fruit flavors." The drink will come in innocent-sounding flavors like strawberry lemonade and blueberry pomegranate, but at 12 percent alcohol (twice the amount found in PBR or Colt 45), it's definitely not for kids.

Pabst Brewing Co. — along with Blast's spokesman, Snoop Dogg — is hoping to target women in their late 20s with the fruity drink. Would you drink it?

And the 2009 World's Ugliest Dog Is . . .

Another Petaluma scorcher for this year's Ugly Dog Contest!

Another Petaluma scorcher for this year's Ugly Dog Contest! The 2009 champ was a new face who won me over with his pronounced underbite, which he uses like a scoop to get the food in at mealtime. Ha. Even though the last several years have featured lil pups like the late Gus, this time a big pup's top dog.

Four-year-old Pabst and his owner, Miles Egstad, came from Citrus Heights, CA — the Boxer mix was super sweet, loved the shade, and seemed to be rather sleepy before his turn on stage. Resting up for his time in the sun, I bet. We got a glimpse of Pabst, blue ribbon and all, so see one more cute pic (and hear what his owner had to say about the win) when you read more

There's A First For Everything

Food and drink are such an integral aspect of every day life, that it's easy to take it all for granted and never think about the creation of it.

Food and drink are such an integral aspect of every day life, that it's easy to take it all for granted and never think about the creation of it. So for a quick culinary history lesson, here are a few food related firsts that occurred on today's date, June 25:

  • The fork turns 377 years old. In 1630, the governor of a colony in Massachusetts introduced the fork to fine American dining.
  • In 1938 a new Federal law was put into action promising workers across the nation a minimum wage of 40 cents per hour.
  • Just 13 short years later, in 1951, the first color beer commercial aired on TV. What brand of beer was it? None other than Pabst Blue Ribbon.
  • Finally in 1974, the first functioning checkout scanner was installed in the supermarket.
