Taste Test: Pringles Stix

Pringles . . . in stick form?

Pringles . . . in stick form? With the relaunch of Pringles Stix ($3) in Pizza, Cheese, and Honey Butter flavors, many in our office scoffed at the unfamiliar shape and wondered how the Pringles Stix fared compared to the company's famed flaky chips. However, the experience and flavors of the sticks weren't what we anticipated. Keep reading to see our tasting notes and rating.

Pringles Pizza Stix

Our tasters sang praises for this pizza flavor. Described as packing plenty of pizza-like flavors, one taster even ventured to say, "I want to go back in time so my mom can pack these in my lunch box." Another likened the sticks to Italian cheesy bread topped with plenty of basil and oregano.

Another Reason Not to Eat Junk: Pringles Recall

As if junk food wasn't bad enough because of the high calorie content and unpronounceable ingredients, here's another reason to avoid it.

As if junk food wasn't bad enough because of the high calorie content and unpronounceable ingredients, here's another reason to avoid it. Procter & Gamble has announced the recall of two flavors of Pringles: Restaurant Cravers Cheeseburger and Family Faves Taco Night. The culprit is the widely used flavor enhancer hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) made by Basic Food Flavors, Inc. Investigators found dirty equipment and poor drainage at the Las Vegas plant and smelly, standing pools of liquid where the HVP was made. What's even worse — the liquid tested positive for salmonella. Um . . . eww.

Pringles isn't the only food to worry about. Hot dogs, chili, stews, gravies, sauces, soups, salad dressings, and other snack foods also contain HVP made from this company. For a full list of products contained in this recall, check out FoodSafety.gov. Will you be tossing anything from your kitchen cabinets?

British Court Rules Pringles Are Indeed Potato Chips

Pringles might be nicknamed "crack in a cardboard tube," but in the eyes of the UK government, they are still considered potato chips.

Pringles might be nicknamed "crack in a cardboard tube," but in the eyes of the UK government, they are still considered potato chips.

Last year, a UK judge ruled that because Pringles contains less than 50 percent potato and is formed into an artificial shape, it's not a chip, and therefore isn't subject to the 15 percent country's value-added tax. But in a major defeat for Pringles parent company P&G, this ruling was overturned, and the corporation must fork over approximately £100 million, or $159 million, in taxes.

In the appeal, P&G's lawyers insisted that the snacks were not potato chips, citing the "uniform color" and arguing that its "regular shape" is "not found in nature." P&G also maintains that Pringles are only 42 percent potato, a fact I'm pretty taken aback by. The chips other ingredients include maltodextrin, dextrose, and wheat starch.

Are you surprised to hear about these ingredients? Do you consider Pringles to be chips?

Foodie Flashback: Brad Pitt Has the Fever

I was trolling around YouTube looking for a fun foodie flashback, when I struck gold.

I was trolling around YouTube looking for a fun foodie flashback, when I struck gold. In a before he was famous moment, Brad Pitt is seen here hawking Pringles potato chips. The commercial itself is actually a bit weird. Three surfer dudes are cruising around in a convertible, run out of Pringles, which makes their car break down. Luckily three bikini babes arrive armed with a sackful of Pringles, they all hang out, eat the chips and then when the Pringles are gone, the dudes hop in their car and drive away. What's Your Favorite Gaming Food?

YumSugar has informed me that Pringles will be rolling out their new concept called Pringles Stix next Spring and will be celebrating the arrival of the wheaty treats by teaming up with Nintendo and going on a seven city tour.

The tour, which will stop in Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Montgomery and Birmingham, will offer hungry gamers free samples, a look at a new Wii game called Boogie and a chance to win a Wii Game Kit, includes the console and wii-mote, some Wii points and likely some Stix.

The talk of gaming and Pringles got me thinking about gamer food. You're probably not eating a gamer candy bar every time you whip out the Playstation, but what do you grub on?

Pringles Stix Goes On Tour

Do you like Pringles?

Do you like Pringles? How about dip-able cracker sticks? Have you ever envisioned the two things together? If you answered yes to all three, then you're in for a treat. Starting next Spring, Pringles will rollout a new concept called Pringles Stix. The baked wheat crackers will come in four flavors: Crunchy Wheat, Vanilla, Honey Butter and Pizza - they'll also only contain 90 calories per pack. To announce the arrival of the newest member of their family, Pringles has combined forces with Nintendo and will tour seven cities. The tour will include free samples as well as a sneak peek of Boogie - a new game for the Wii. Oh and if free snacks weren't enough to entice you out of your house, then perhaps the chance to win a Wii Game Kit might. One kit - which includes a Wii console, a Boogie game, an extra Wii remote and 2000 Wii Points - will be given away at each city on the tour (Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Montgomery and Birmingham).

Personally, I'm feeling a little skeptical about these Pringles Stix. I have a special place in my belly for regular Pringles, but haven't been too impressed with their other lines.

Once You Pop...

Looks like Pringles is going to have to change their jingle.

Looks like Pringles is going to have to change their jingle. The "Once You Pop, You Can't Stop" might work for their well known cans, however you'll now be able to find them sold in bags. The newly bagged options are miniature in size and come in zany new flavors such as parmesan garlic, cinnamon sweet potato and Szechuan bbq rice crisps (their first foray into non-potato chip). The Pringles Minis come in a box of 5 and will set you back about $1.99. What do you think about the new Pringles?

80's Pringles Commercial

"It's the deep-fried taste/it's the crispy crunch..." Wait, back up.

"It's the deep-fried taste/it's the crispy crunch..." Wait, back up. "Deep-fried taste"? And what is that taste exactly--grease?! (And we wonder why America became land of the fat.)
