Spring picnics are a celebration of the season, and a return to outdoor activities that previously were impossible thanks to inclement weather. That said, Spring picnics are still less predictable than Summer picnics. That means you have to plan for fluctuations in temperature and sun conditions. Plan prudently by bringing a heavier picnic blanket that can serve as a quick coverup for chilly shoulders. The Urbancase Getaway Blanket ($175) is made from vintage Italian army surplus blankets and embroidered with an image of a super-cute little Euro jalopy. It's been prewashed for softness, so you don't have to worry about the itch factor if you're snuggling with your honey on it.
However, the sun might get pretty hot during a Spring picnic afternoon, so make sure to bring a sun hat as well; maybe you're into the stripes on this Lacoste Striped Sun Hat ($65)? A Swing Hermetic Glass Water Bottle ($3) will keep you hydrated on hot afternoons (or provide a good place to hide your hooch), too.
For the coolest shopping basket ever, secure a Design House Stockholm Shopping Basket ($37) to the handlebars of your Dutch-style bike, or use it as a tote to carry your farmers market produce to the park for an impromptu al frescho healthy lunch. Come Party With Me: Spring Picnic — The Look
Let the beauty of the natural outdoors be the highlight of your Spring picnic's look. Spread out a picnic blanket in an area that is close to a pretty view or fresh beds of blooming flowers. Pack the non-perishable food in a picnic basket and the dishes that need to remain cold in a cooler. Bring folding lawn chairs to sit on. Fill plastic pitchers with the drinks and place upright in the cooler.
At the park, serve the food on plastic white plates with pink silverware and yellow linen napkins. Pour the drinks into clear plastic cups. Don't forget to bring a fun park activity that everyone can partake in after the picnic. A couple of Frisbees or kites are highly amusing.
Come Party With Me: Spring Picnic — Drinks
Since the menu and dessert for my Spring picnic are super traditional, I've decided to carry the theme over to the drinks too. What screams picnic more than lemonade and iced tea? While the iced tea will be classic and simple, the lemonade is a jazzed up adult version with vodka and mint.
Both concoctions taste better after sitting for several hours, so make the drinks in advance. Pour into pitchers with lids or a thermos for easy transportation to the park. Don't forget to fill a cooler with other beverages — water, beer, sodas, sparkling juices, Orangina, etc. — for those who prefer not to drink lemonade or iced tea. For the drink recipes, read more
Come Party With Me: Spring Picnic — Dessert
For my Spring picnic, I knew apple pie had to be on the menu because it's the quintessential American dessert. The only problem is pie isn't the most picnic friendly of meals. Unlike cookies or brownies, pie just does not transport easily.
However, this recipe for apple pie bars looks picnic perfect. The crust is a crisp shortbread, the filling a mixture of apples and cinnamon sugar, and the topping an oat-walnut streusel. All the familiar flavors of apple pie are present, but no fork or plate is necessary! To see how it's made, read more
Come Party With Me: Spring Picnic — Menu
The past couple of days have been gloriously sunny here in San Francisco, inspiring me to plan a Spring picnic. The menu will consist of classic picnic foods best enjoyed under the bright blue sky. Homemade fried chicken will be placed in a big basket with delicious dipping sauces on the side. The recipe includes a spicy ancho honey, but if you prefer to serve fried chicken with blue cheese or ranch dip, offer those instead.
Coleslaw cups are a wonderful accompaniment to the fried chicken. Egg salad sandwiches on hearty wheat bread round out the homemade picnic spread. Supplement the menu with your favorite store bought picnic foods: potato chips, celery sticks, or hummus dip are excellent ideas.

Come Party With Me: Spring Picnic — Invite
Spring has sprung! To celebrate, I'm gathering up some friends, heading to Crissy Field, and having a picnic. Spring is a great time to have a picnic because the weather is warm without being too hot. However, the success of the picnic depends on good weather, so be sure to check out the local forecast when you start to plan. Once the weatherman has given you the go ahead, send the invitations. To see how I made these grassy green invites, read more
