Top Chef: Just Desserts Announces Sweet Judge Lineup

On last night's installment of Top Chef: Washington DC, award-winning pastry whiz Johnny Iuzzini judged the pie quickfire — and revealed he'll be head judge on the forthcoming Top Chef: Just Desserts.

On last night's installment of Top Chef: Washington DC, award-winning pastry whiz Johnny Iuzzini judged the pie quickfire — and revealed he'll be head judge on the forthcoming Top Chef: Just Desserts.

Joining Iuzzini and Gail Simmons, the host of the new series, will be Hubert Keller (a runner-up on Top Chef Masters) and DailyCandy editor-at-large Dannielle Kyrillos.

I'm surprised with the lineup of judges yet, at the same time, not surprised at all. It remains to be seen what kind of insight they'll lend to the evaluation process. What do you think of the announcement? And what are your thoughts on last night's Top Chef 7 episode?

Gail Simmons Gets a Brand-New Gig

A couple of months ago, Bravo announced yet another Top Chef spinoff: Top Chef: Just Desserts.

A couple of months ago, Bravo announced yet another Top Chef spinoff: Top Chef: Just Desserts. The culinary competition, which has already held casting calls, will be a Top Chef-style show that features pastry chefs. Yesterday the network released the news that Food & Wine's Gail Simmons, a recurring judge on the regular Top Chef, will host Just Desserts. Via her Twitter account, Simmons confirmed, stating, "upping daily sugar consumption in preparation." I'm a huge Gail fan and am already looking forward to the premiere of Just Desserts. How about you? Are you excited to learn that Gail Simmons has her own show?

Are There Too Many Chef Shows on TV?

We've already talked about the abundance of dance shows on TV, but there's another genre that seems to be taking over the networks — competitive cooking.

We've already talked about the abundance of dance shows on TV, but there's another genre that seems to be taking over the networks — competitive cooking. NBC just picked up United Plates of America, a new series by the producers of Top Chef which will pit hopeful restaurateurs against each other for the ultimate prize of starting their own chain. The winner gets to open four locations on the night of the finale. That's a pretty cool gift package, but it has me thinking — don't we have enough of this programming on TV already?

The premise does sound more unique than most, but it used to be that the Food Network was the only TV cooking choice with its popular Iron Chef franchise. Since then, other channels have gotten in on the act, too, like Fox's Hell's Kitchen and of course Bravo with Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, Top Chef: Just Desserts . . . need I go on?

Of course, if you're a foodie, you may be excited to have yet another show for your TiVo queue, but I wonder if all of this is overkill. How about you?

Can You Name That Classic Dessert?

The Top Chef news of the week came early yesterday morning when we learned that Bravo was sweetening its line of spinoffs with a 2010 show called Top Chef: Just Desserts.

Since the whole Top Chef franchise is starting to tire out for at least a few of us, I thought I'd get everybody pumped for the new show (and National Dessert Month!) by testing your knowledge of classic desserts from around the world.

I'll spit out a picture, and you tell me what dessert it depicts. Ready? Go!

Bravo Turns to Pastry For Next Top Chef Spinoff

First Top Chef Junior, then Top Chef Masters , Top Chef Wine, and Top Chef, the Magazine.

First Top Chef Junior, then Top Chef Masters , Top Chef Wine, and Top Chef, the Magazine. What's next: Top Chef Desserts? Actually, yes. This week, Bravo begins casting calls for a new TC spinoff airing in 2010, Top Chef: Just Desserts. In a move that means year-round Top Chef programming, the show will feature pastry chefs living together and facing off in — you guessed it! — a weekly elimination. No word yet on who the host or judges will be.

Calling pastry "a different skill," Bravo exec Frances Berwick added, "We're finding people really love this franchise, and there seems to be no end to the interest in it." Really? I beg to differ and, like PartySugar, I am tiring of the Top Chef brand — not to mention all the cake competitions that have become so prolific on TV.

What say you? Will you watch Top Chef: Just Desserts?
