How To

Make This Thanksgiving Vegetarian-Friendly

Although the turkey is a huge part of the holiday, this Thanksgiving, why not honor the vegetables (and the vegetarians), too? You could plan an entirely meat-free meal or simply make your Thanksgiving more vegetarian-friendly. With a few small steps, you can easily alter your menu to suit both carnivores and vegetarians. Here's how:

  • Start by making all of the appetizers vegetarian. Serve things like baked goat cheese and crackers, olives, and nuts. Your meat-eating family and friends won't turn these down.
  • When it comes to the sides, offer a variety of meat-less dishes. If you're cooking the stuffing inside the bird, set aside some for the vegetarians and bake in a gratin dish.
  • Use vegetarian stock. One of the biggest mistakes people make when cooking for vegetarians is forgetting about the stock.

Do You Eat Meat Substitutes Like Tofurkey or Soyrizo?

I'm not a vegetarian and, therefore, don't have very much experience with meat substitutes like tofurkey or soyrizo, but I would love to learn more about these products.

Drumroll, please: actress Olivia Wilde and Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harper have been named PETA's sexiest celeb vegetarians of 2010. The pair — who are both vegans — beat out other sexy notables like Joaquin Phoenix, Hayden Panettiere, and Ellen DeGeneres.

Here's what Olivia and Bob told PETA about living a vegan lifestyle.

  • Olivia on being vegan: "Beyond my desire to boycott the torture factories, I am also way happier when I eat a plant based diet, and I feel about a thousand times more energetic."
  • Bob on being vegan: "I enjoy living a plant-based diet because it makes me feel clear headed and strong, not to mention my genetically high cholesterol dropped more than 100 points . . . That was all the motivation I needed."

Past sexy PETA celebrity vegetarians include Leona Lewis, Kristen Bell, and Josh Hartnett.

GirlA's Product Review: Tofutti Cuties Cookies 'N Cream

Summer is approaching, so ice cream is a must.

Summer is approaching, so ice cream is a must. This product review was submitted by YumSugar member girlA in the Dairy Free Diva Recipe Exchange group.
Delicious. That’s about it. Ok, so here’s the low-down: one cutie is 130 calories with 6 grams of fat. So not the healthiest, but c’mon, it’s fake ice cream! And when you’re a vegan, tasty fake ice cream is like striking gold.

Completely dairy-free, these ice cream sandwiches come in several flavors: Cookies ‘N Cream, Vanilla, Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Key Lime, Wild Berry, Coffee Break, Strawberry Wave, and Very Vanilla (I guess the other vanilla is just sort of vanilla).

To see if girlA thought they were as good as the ice cream sandwiches she ate as a kid, keep reading.

Love It or Hate It

Alfalfa Spouts: Love Them or Hate Them?

When I went to UC Berkeley there was a cafe on Telegraph Avenue, Intermezzo, that I (well, everyone) would frequent.

When I went to UC Berkeley there was a cafe on Telegraph Avenue, Intermezzo, that I (well, everyone) would frequent. Known for its vegetarian cuisine, Intermezzo made excellent soups, salads, and sandwiches. I loved everything about this place, except for one small thing: the sandwiches came with sprouts! While Yum loves them, alfalfa sprouts are an ingredient that I would like to forget. I find them tasteless, stringy, and hate how they always get stuck in your teeth. How about you?

Do You Make Separate Dishes For Vegetarians?

Recently I served grilled bacon-wrapped jalapeños at a party.

Recently I served grilled bacon-wrapped jalapeños at a party. Since my girlfriend Melissa — who's a vegetarian — was in attendance, I made some wrapped in basil instead of bacon. While I normally try to offer a meal that everyone can enjoy (without creating more work for myself!), this wasn't the first time I've made one dish for vegetarians and another for meat-eaters. How about you? Do you accommodate the vegetarians in your life?

NBC Pulls PETA Super Bowl Ad For Being Too Provocative

Animal rights organization PETA has always produced campaigns that have been the subject of contention.

Animal rights organization PETA has always produced campaigns that have been the subject of contention. And, with Super Bowl Sunday — the biggest day of the year for advertising — looming around the corner, the group has naturally found itself in a hotbed of controversy. NBC has rejected PETA's newest TV spot, aptly titled "Studies Show Vegetarians Have Better Sex." According to the network, the ad — which shows scantily clad women in salacious positions with vegetables — "depicts a level of sexuality exceeding our standards."

The provocative commercial isn't PETA's first suggestive spot. Last year, PETA began its massive campaign linking vegetarianism to virility. Its ads included pictures of women in lingerie with the slogan "Get it up! Go vegetarian." Watch the clip of the banned commercial below, and tell me whether you think NBC was right to pull this suggestive ad.

Was a San Francisco Chronicle columnist on point when he insinuated that PETA is using porn to sell nature? Or is NBC out of line in banning the ad at a time when TV shows run rampant with violence and murder?

Have You Ever Pretended a Dish Was Vegetarian?

The majority of you have never taken ownership of a store-bought dish (which frankly, I found surprising!), and now I want to know if you've ever served a vegetarian a dish that wasn't totally meatless?

Do Tell: Would You Try to Raise a Vegetarian (or Vegan) Pet?

I certainly don't know many kitties that would turn down some fresh fish as a treat .

I certainly don't know many kitties that would turn down some fresh fish as a treat . . . and I can't be the only one with the iconic cartoon image of a cat lapping milk in my head. However, a recent post on Dolittler (my go-to site for a behind-the-scenes vet perspective) got me thinking: Are there really vegan pets out there?Seems that converting pets – especially cats – to a vegetarian or even the veggies only diet (with no milk or egg proteins for vegans) is a risky choice but one that some still consider. Dr. Patty Khuly writes:

Cats' bodies (specifically, their gastrointestinal tracts) are not ideally suited to digesting non-meat foods. Though they may seem to do well on these diets once they’ve acclimated to them, the long-term effects of feeding feline diets that lack animal proteins have not been established.

Now it's one thing if you have a pet that would choose the vegetarian option in the wild (goats, rabbits, chickens, etc.) but it doesn't seem fair to impose personal beliefs that could endanger your animals' health in the process? What's your take?
