Super Bowl Fans' Feathers Ruffled Over Buffalo Wing Shortage

Super Bowl XLIII is less than a week away, but this year, lovers of the chicken wing — game day's unofficial snack — will be enjoying their poultry on a wing and a prayer.

Super Bowl XLIII is less than a week away, but this year, lovers of the chicken wing — game day's unofficial snack — will be enjoying their poultry on a wing and a prayer. Since few Super Bowl parties are without chicken wings, consumer demand, as it generally is during football season, is sky-high. Unfortunately, the supply for chicken wings is way down. Major wing supplier Pilgrim's Pride of Pittsburgh, TX, recently filed Chapter 11 company reorganization. As a result, the price of wings is soaring nationwide, and in some cases, up to 30 percent in the past three months.

Consumers, restaurants, and distributors are handling the crisis in different ways. Some are setting aside vast quantities of wings for the big game. Other restaurants, feeling the pinch, have doubled the prices of wings on their menu.

In turn, customers, like the wing lovers of Buffalo, NY, the birthplace of the spicy chicken wing, are so fed up with astronomical prices that they've called for a wing boycott. This year I'll be serving buffalo chicken fingers or buffalo chicken cheese dip instead of wings.

Have you noticed an increase in price? Would you be willing to pay more simply to have chicken wings at your Super Bowl celebration?

Buffalo Chicken Two Ways — Beginner and Expert

From pickled jalapeños to chipotle chile chocolate bars, I love spicy food, but if I were forced to pick a favorite, I'd have to go with spicy buffalo chicken.

From pickled jalapeños to chipotle chile chocolate bars, I love spicy food, but if I were forced to pick a favorite, I'd have to go with spicy buffalo chicken. Not only is it the ultimate comfort food, but the tender chicken is also crispy, zippy, and tangy all at once.

Whether you're looking for the perfect Super Bowl party platter or you simply want something to fulfill your quest for spice, look no further than these buffalo chicken recipes.

The first, made with breast tenders and breaded for crunchiness, is a simplified version of the classic buffalo wing. Alternately, pull out your frying pan and try your wing hand at a traditional recipe for buffalo chicken. Both are definite crowd pleasers.

I go ga-ga over anything sparkly and Swarovski. These Swarovski Flight Clip Earrings ($70) instantly caught my eye. The wing shape is cool and the dark hued stones are divine. But clip-ons? Bum deal. Agreed?

I'm so relieved to know I wasn't alone in my nerd-love for Wings and you all came up with some great new casts for this show I secretly loved for years. I could tell you guys were having fun thinking up which actors could look like brothers. alynn went the logical route and cast real-life brothers Luke and Owen Wilson. I also thought leeluvfashion was right on with her casting of Michael Vartan and Paul Walker as brothers — they totally look like they could have the same DNA.

As for Helen, I liked fatatiecat07's idea for Reese Witherspoon, as she completely embodies the spunky spirit of that character. daisydidi's idea for Michael Imperioli to play Antonio Scarpacci is awesome, though after so many years on the Sopranos I still see him as more scary than snuggly.

In the end, I just had to choose the recast with the most adorable combo of two small-screen actors as the main brothers. Congrats to Chibbie!

Recast Wings and Win a Prize!

This week, let's recast a show that I watched a lot as a kid: Wings! It's kind of an embarrassing show to admit I was really into because it was totally tame, like something only boring adults might watch as frequently as I did.

I mean, do you remember the show's opener? It's hilariously uncool. But you know what? The two lead guys were cute and that short woman with the Southern accent was sassy, and I just couldn't help but give into their charms!

So, who would you cast to play the brothers Hackett? Both are pilots and run Sandpiper Air on Nantucket Island but that's where the similarities end. Joe Hackett is the older, more mature one while Brian is the flaky ladies man. What about Helen, the attractive and smart woman who runs the lunch counter in the airport terminal?

One of my favorite characters on Wings was Antonio Scarpacci, the taxi driver on the island, originally played by Monk star Tony Shalhoub. Who else could play this romantic Italian character with a heart of gold? And finally let's recast Lowell Mather, originally Thomas Haden Church's role. Lowell is the hilariously dense airport mechanic who often frustrated the Hackett men.

Leave your entry in the comment section below, and I'll pick one winner to feature Tuesday, August 5, complete with a "new" cast photo.

P.L.O.W. - Birds in Flight

Part of the reason I love to be outside is because of the astounding wildlife I get to observe, especially birds.

Part of the reason I love to be outside is because of the astounding wildlife I get to observe, especially birds. The end of the summer is a great time to catch glimpses of all types of birds getting ready to migrate to warmer places. I love bringing binoculars along when I hike so if a hawk or some geese fly overhead, I can get a closer look.

This play list is in honor or those gorgeous winged creatures. When I look up and see them, I think about what it must be like to soar overhead and gaze down at our beautiful earth. It makes me feel small in a way, and it reminds me to appreciate the important things in life.

"And Your Bird Can Sing" - The Beatles, 2:01

Sunday BBQ: Grilled Jerk Chicken Wings

Somehow, I always forget that I'm a huge fan of chicken wings.

Somehow, I always forget that I'm a huge fan of chicken wings. They're simple to fix up, and are small enough that you don't feel like you're eating a lot — even after you've chowed down an entire platter. They also make perfect party food, and go great with the fall sporting season. You can do them in the oven, but why not make the most out of the last few weeks of summer by throwing them on the barbecue. To check out a great recipe for grilled jerk chicken wings, read more
