Beyond the Basket: Toting Your Gear While Biking

I love the romance of a wicker bike basket.

I love the romance of a wicker bike basket. The sweet look reminds me of picnic baskets. But when it comes to toting all sorts of things about while biking, you do have other options. Depending on your needs, a basket may be too big or too small, so take a tour of three alternative ways to store your gear while cycling.

Yum's July Must Haves

With the arrival of July, it's safe to say that Summer is in full swing. Currently I'm obsessed with hearty salads, planning picnics, eating outdoors, and homemade ice cream. I've rounded up the month's most important items — I either can't live without them or I'm dying to get my hands on them. In order to enjoy a spectacular July, here's what you must have.

Amazing Bento Boxes

Now these folks know how to play with their food!

Now these folks know how to play with their food! Lunch is one of my favorite parts of the day. It doesn't matter if I'm eating takeout, or if I brought a modest sandwich in the office to toast in our panini maker (mmmm, toasted sandwich!). The point is, lunch rules. Imagine if you made your lunch in the shape of cute animals and funny faces? I don't know if I can get behind blue rice, but mushrooms in the shape of birds flying into an egg yolk sunset? A sandwich with angry red bell pepper eyebrows? Sign me up!

Bento of the Week: Mexican Meatloaf

This week's bento box comes from Bento Yum.

This week's bento box comes from Bento Yum. It has super cute accouterments, but I love it because it shows that a bento box doesn't have to be an Asian meal. This time it's a Mexican meatloaf and a baked potato. I know I'd love to open my lunch box up to that!

Definition: Bento

Bento A single portion boxed lunch or meal common in Japanese cuisine.

Bento
A single portion boxed lunch or meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento consists of rice, fish/meat and vegetables on the side. The containers are usually compartmentalized, but not always.

It is even thought of as an art form and a skill. The food is often arranged to resemble other objects, such as flowers, leaves, cartoon characters etc.
