Come Party With Me: Oktoberfest — Menu

Contrary to popular belief, Oktoberfest, the annual German beer festival, doesn't begin in October, it actually starts this weekend!

Contrary to popular belief, Oktoberfest, the annual German beer festival, doesn't begin in October, it actually starts this weekend! Just because I can't travel to this year's event doesn't mean I shouldn't celebrate in the comforts of my own home. You can, too, by following my plan for the ultimate Oktoberfest.

Start by serving a delectable German-inspired meal. Sauteed bratwurst are succulent when paired with braised sauerkraut, soft onions, and sweet apples. A classic vinegar-based potato salad is a filling and savory side dish. To get these recipes please keep reading.

Bratwurst is a type of uncured, fresh sausage made typically from pork, and less commonly with beef and veal. It originated in Germany, and remains popular there and in areas of the American Midwest. While no standard recipe exists for brats, as they're affectionately called, the sausages are heavily spiced, and may include the likes of cardamom, celery seeds, caraway, and coriander.

The cased sausages, which are especially popular during tailgating season, are grilled or simmered in beer, then served with grainy mustard and other condiments on a hard roll.

Would You Eat This Pork, Beef, and Bratwurst Sandwich?

At a recent outdoor festival, a friend of mine ordered this sandwich, called the "Gutbuster," from a barbecue stand.

At a recent outdoor festival, a friend of mine ordered this sandwich, called the "Gutbuster," from a barbecue stand. The soft bun was piled with three kinds of meat — beef brisket, pulled pork, and beer-braised bratwurst — and topped with spicy sauce. Though it looks kinda gross, I have to admit that it was full of delicious flavor. Would you dare to bust your gut with this monstrosity?

Festival To Celebrate Sausage Starting Now

In the world's oldest cookbook, The Apicius Cookery, the sausage making process is described, making it one of the earliest forms of processed meat known to mankind.

In the world's oldest cookbook, The Apicius Cookery, the sausage making process is described, making it one of the earliest forms of processed meat known to mankind. Today the bratwurst, perhaps the most popular sausage, is celebrated at the annual Bratwurst Festival in Bucyrus, Ohio. It's disputable who is the official bratwurst capital of the world; Bucyrus claims to be, as does Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Although Sheboygan is the home to the largest bratwurst manufacturer, Bucyrus' festival has made the city famous. Since I can't get to the festival, it looks like I'll have to order a brat the next time I go to Top Dog at a Cal game. If anybody makes it to the festival, please post pics!
