Spiced Burgers With Cucumber Yogurt

Indian Spiced Burger Recipe

Ingredients

1/2 seedless cucumber, peeled and finely chopped
1/2 cup low-fat plain Greek yogurt
1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1 1/4 pounds 90 percent lean ground beef
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1 clove garlic, finely grated
1 1/2 teaspoons red or yellow curry powder
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
4 hamburger buns, split, toasted

Directions

  1. Mix the cucumber, yogurt, cilantro, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste in a bowl. Set aside while you make the burgers.
  2. Combine the beef, onion, garlic, curry powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper in a bowl and mix with your hands until just combined. Form into four 4-inch-wide patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  3. Heat the olive oil in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the burger patties and cook, turning once, until cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes for medium.
  4. Place the burgers on the buns. Stir the cucumber-yogurt mixture and spoon on top. Serve immediately.

Burger or Not a Burger?

It's National Burger Month, and we find ourselves asking: what makes a burger a burger?
Black Bean Burger

It's National Burger Month, and we find ourselves asking: what makes a burger a burger? Is it the bun? Or the patty? Must it be made with ground beef, or can it be any kind of ground meat or protein? It all depends on how you define "burger," which is truly an existential question for our modern foodie times. Before we get bogged down in a highbrow burger debate, let's do this the easy way: click through the gallery of burgers and cast your vote on which should be considered a true burger and which ones are undeserving of the title.

5 Burger Toppings Inspired by Burger Bash

It was just a week ago that we were chomping down on burgers at Rachael Ray's Burger Bash in South Beach, where we tried just about every topping imaginable on a burger, from Morimoto's braised pork and wagyu beef to Guy Fieri's secret donkey sauce.

It was just a week ago that we were chomping down on burgers at Rachael Ray's Burger Bash in South Beach, where we tried just about every topping imaginable on a burger, from Morimoto's braised pork and wagyu beef to Guy Fieri's secret donkey sauce. Seven days later, we're still dreaming of those patties, and hoping to re-create some of them at home. Here are several things we're hoping to try on our own burgers at home.

Brick cheese spread
Give the burger a further nod to nostalgic Americana by adding creamy, dreamy brick cheese spread. Keep it honest and go for one made by one of Wisconsin's cheese artisans, like Abe & Arthur's did.

Bacon mixed into the beef patty
Tons of restaurants were doing this, from Shake Shack to Chicago's NoMI Kitchen (served with a spiked watermelon slice, no less!). We were most fond of applewood-smoked bacon coarsely chopped into the beef patty, then served with cherry pepper relish, as seen in Danny Meyer's SmokeShack burger.

On the Scene at Rachael Ray's Burger Bash

Without a doubt, the biggest event at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival is Rachael Ray's annual Burger Bash.

Without a doubt, the biggest event at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival is Rachael Ray's annual Burger Bash. The event was bigger and badder than ever, with 32 burgers from top restaurants and chefs across the country. It was also incredibly loud, hot, sweaty, sandy, and chaotic; frankly, we're not sure how we survived it. But we did eat some stellar burgers: read on to see who served what, and — of course — who won the coveted Burger Bash prizes!

Garbanzo Bean Burgers Are a Vegetarian Must Make

Veggie burgers don't have to be boring or bland, and this awesome recipe proves it.

Veggie burgers don't have to be boring or bland, and this awesome recipe proves it. The patties are made from garbanzo beans, so if you're a fan of falafel then you'll enjoy this burger. The spicy lemon mayonnaise and crunchy carrot slaw are essential to the dish. Don't leave them out; each component comes together to make a wonderfully flavorful and filling burger. When I made the patties the first time, I didn't use an egg; however, they started to fall apart, so I recommend using the egg as a binder. I warmed the patties in a skillet, but they would be great grilled. Ready to get cooking? Here's the recipe.

8 Brazen Bites We Tried at Burger Bash

Day two of the New York City Wine & Food Festival has just wrapped, and I'm not sure how I did it, but I managed to survive one of the weekend's flagship events, the Burger Bash.

Day two of the New York City Wine & Food Festival has just wrapped, and I'm not sure how I did it, but I managed to survive one of the weekend's flagship events, the Burger Bash. This year's fête, which was hosted by comedienne Whoopi Goldberg (regular host Rachael Ray was out of the country on vacation), featured 21 different burgers, mostly from the New York area. Not only did I manage to survive the impressively big bovine lineup, but I came out on top: nearly ever contender I bit into was so creative that it left me with a takeaway that's guaranteed to make me a better burger builder, too. See the burgers — and their best takeaways — when you keep clicking.

25 Best Burgers From Coast to Coast

What makes a hamburger a hamburger?

What makes a hamburger a hamburger? We could ponder the question for days, but wouldn't you rather bite into a juicy burger?

But not just any burger: we've taste-tested our way around the country to find 25 amazing hamburgers you shouldn't miss. Whether you're a local or a tourist, it's certainly worth seeking out these must-have hamburgers.

YumSugar's Top 5 Burgers

  1. Shake Shack, New York, NY: Danny Meyer's burger empire has the beast down to a science, with cloud-soft buns, subtle "shack sauce," and meltable American cheese for a creamy experience every time. For us, this cheeseburger sets the standard.
  2. Spruce, San Francisco, CA: This cloth napkin burger doesn't come cheap, but it's one of the juiciest we've ever had, and its piquant accompaniments — house-pickled onions and zucchini, duck fat fries — lend it a distinct point of view.
  3. Radius, Boston, MA: Chef Michael Schlow is no stranger to good burgers. His ideal involves fried onion rings, melted cheddar cheese, and a spicy and smooth horseradish sauce — pretty much our ideal, too.
  4. B Spot, Strongsville, OH: Michael Symon's burger joint, B Spot, serves beef on a bun that's as close to perfection as we've ever had. His Yo! burger is filled with fried salami slices, coppa, hot peppers, provolone, and "shasha" banana pepper sauce.
  5. Rosamunde, San Francisco, CA: Rosamunde is known for its sausages, but it serves cheeseburgers every Tuesday at lunch. Be prepared to wait in line for the flavorful, medium-rare burgers, which are some of the city's best.
