Happy Hour: Starlight

On a recent Monday night I found myself at Harry Denton's Starlight Room at the top of San Francisco's Sir Francis Drake Hotel.

On a recent Monday night I found myself at Harry Denton's Starlight Room at the top of San Francisco's Sir Francis Drake Hotel. I was at a party that celebrated one of my favorite mixologists Tony Abou-Ganim's new cocktail recipe book, The Modern Mixologist.

The book is beautiful. It's packed with helpful information on glassware and bar basics, and it also provides a guide to mixing drinks with seasonal produce as well as a brief history of cocktails. The first recipe I decided to try was Abou-Ganim's first original libation, and it's named after the bar where he created it in 1996.

It's a complex combination of Campari, Cointreau, and orange juice; a brandy float provides a potent finish. I thoroughly enjoyed this beverage; to do the same, get Ganim's recipe now.

Come Party With Me: Potluck Thanksgiving — Drinks

If your house is the location of a Thanksgiving potluck, your hosting duties not only include making the turkey, but also preparing a cocktail.

If your house is the location of a Thanksgiving potluck, your hosting duties not only include making the turkey, but also preparing a cocktail. When guests arrive offer them a glass to get things started. Since the meal is a big one, serve an apéritif — something not too sweet that will stimulate the palate like these campari and triple-sec concoctions.

On the flip side, when attending a Thanksgiving potluck, don't show up empty handed. Bring a bottle of sparkling wine or Beaujolais Nouveau or a six-pack of festive pumpkin ale.

Come Party With Me: My Birthday Party — Drinks

There's lots going on with the drinks at my 28th birthday dinner.

There's lots going on with the drinks at my 28th birthday dinner. I plan on serving a different wine with each course, but before we sit down to the meal, I'll offer guests glasses of a specialty cocktail. Since the menu is rustic Italian, the cocktail features Italy's most popular aperitif and campari. When mixed with a sweet late-harvest wine and fresh-squeezed orange juice, the vibrantly colored spirit tastes far from bitter.

At dinner, I pair the salad with a crisp, dry, minerally Italian white wine. A fruity aromatic rosé will balance out the richness of the cheesy pasta course. For the seafood stew entree, I'll serve a light-bodied softer red wine.

Finally, there's only one thing to sip with the dessert: a slightly sweet sparkling wine! To check out the campari cocktail recipe, read more

Happy Hour: Campari Squeeze

I'm still rather novice to the category of spirits known as aperitifs.

I'm still rather novice to the category of spirits known as aperitifs. These old-school standbys — which include liqueurs, dry champagne, and fortified wines — rose to fame in Europe in the 1800s, and have remained popular ever since.

I'd made it my mission to educate myself in aperitif studies, and after professing my love for Dubonnet, I felt adventurous enough to move onto the Italian spirit known as Campari. Invented in 1860, this bitter, which is used in a slew of different cocktails, is made by infusing alcohol and water with fruit, bitter herbs, and aromatic plants. Campari on the rocks is far too bitter for me, but I loved its complex, fruity, slightly medicinal flavor in the Campari Breeze, a cocktail that's perfect for warm-weather days.

To cool off on a sweltering weekend, I doubled the recipe for a bigger thirst quencher, employing Party's advice to save the ice until last. To see the recipe, read more

Which Eva Mendes for Campari Outfit Is Most Fab?

In case you missed it, Eva Mendes is Campari's new calendar girl.

In case you missed it, Eva Mendes is Campari's new calendar girl. Though the main focus is supposed to be the alcoholic beverage, I can't help but be mesmerized by her over-the-top, glamorous ensembles. These four are by far the standouts of the bunch. They're all red-carpet worthy, but the one I'd love to borrow is the long, gold sequined gown. Which one do you want to borrow?

Happy Hour: Negroni

It's cocktail week here in San Francisco and a whole bunch of the city by the bay's best bartenders are participating in celebrating the dynamic beverage community.

It's cocktail week here in San Francisco and a whole bunch of the city by the bay's best bartenders are participating in celebrating the dynamic beverage community. This is the first year this event has been hosted and many popular bars, lounges, and restaurants are contributing by featuring two limited edition specialty cocktails: one classic recipe and one innovative concoction. As I browsed through the list of cocktails, I noticed two places were offering a negroni as their classic cocktail. Invented in Florence, Italy in the 1900s, a negroni is often consumed as an aperitif to stimulate the appetite. For the recipe (if you are an aspiring mixologist you better learn how to make this!) read more
