5 Kid-Friendly Takes on the Milk Mustache

It's National Milk Day — the anniversary of the first time milk was delivered in bottles in 1878!

It's National Milk Day — the anniversary of the first time milk was delivered in bottles in 1878! A dietary must for our growing lil ones, milk can be a drink your kiddos either love or love to hate. If you battle with the latter more often than not, consider these five discreet ways to get them sippin'. From turning this calcium-packed drink into an Orange Julius or sweet hot cocoa, watch your tikes drink their way to strong without a fuss!

  1. Chocolate Milk: A favorite of both chocolate-lovers and kids! Instead of opting for store-bought, make your own with a spoonful of chocolate syrup or a scoop of a chocolate vitamin mix (like Ovaltine) for added nutrition. Stir it up with a magic milk straw for an extra dose of sweet!
  2. Milkshakes: Who doesn't love a thick, creamy milkshake? Although this treat can be packed with sugar, your kids can enjoy a daily dose of calcium with this healthy chocolate milkshake recipe.
  3. Orange Julius: This smooth and creamy drink made with orange juice and milk is a great alternative to cream sodas. Check out this frosty recipe that combines the best of fruit and dairy.
  4. Hot Chocolate: Your kids can decadently enjoy a glass of milk by sipping on hot cocoa. Use a simple powder or these fun hot-chocolate sticks, then top with a few marshmallows. Mmmm toasty.
  5. Cereal: Sounds basic, but get your kids to enjoy milk in cereal. If your kids usually don't have cereal for breakfast or only use it as an on-the-go snack, serve up cereal in a big bowl of milk and watch them start to sip!

What's Your Favorite Recovery Drink?

After a particularly vigorous workout, run, or bike ride, you need to replenish important nutrients in your system.

After a particularly vigorous workout, run, or bike ride, you need to replenish important nutrients in your system. A recovery drink helps you quickly get what you need — electrolytes to rehydrate as well as carbs and protein to rebuild your muscle. There are many ways to drink those essential nutrients after a workout, from ready-made sports drinks like Gatorade to chocolate milk or coconut water (or even just making your own with maple syrup).

If you are a recovery drink fan, what's your drink of choice?

Chocolate Milk Post Workout?

Nothing beats a tall glass of ice cold water chocolate milk after a long workout.

Nothing beats a tall glass of ice cold water chocolate milk after a long workout. Sounds too good to be true and makes me want to watch The Jetsons, but chocolate milk could be the post exercise "recovery" drink you've been searching for.

After years of promoting carbo loading before exercise, research shows that the body needs and can process carbs post-workout more efficiently. For 30 to 45 minutes post workout, the human body is primed to replenish the lost fuel because your muscles are more responsive to insulin. The insulin helps muscles pull glucose, made from carbs, out of the bloodstream and into the muscle. This will provide fuel for the muscles for the next time you head out to workout. Add a little protein to the mix and your muscles can store even more fuel. Protein also helps repair the muscle damage associated with strengthening them. The recommended ratio is 4:1, carbs to protein.

An eight-ounce glass of low fat chocolate milk provides 32 grams of carbs and 11 grams of protein. If you are trying to lose weight, just beware that this simple recovery drink also contains 200 calories. Chocolate milk may not be the ideal post workout food for you; yogurt or a smoothie would work too or anything else that has both protein and carbs. Plus, you really only need to consider downing a recovery drink if you have worked out intensely for at least 60 minutes.

Product of the Day: Moo Mixer Chocolate Milk Mixer

If you or your little ones are too lazy to mix your own chocolate milk, allow me to introduce the Moo Mixer, a special motorized mug that swirls your milk with your chocolate.

If you or your little ones are too lazy to mix your own chocolate milk, allow me to introduce the Moo Mixer, a special motorized mug that swirls your milk with your chocolate. You know, sort of like a spoon does, only faster and using batteries! I hate to say it, but if you're drinking so much chocolate milk that you have a special mug to mix it for you, perhaps you could stand to give the spoon a twirl . . . or, you know, go for a walk or something.

Suck It Up! Get Instant Chocolate Milk From a Straw

A few months ago, I told you guys about straws that help flavor milk.

A few months ago, I told you guys about straws that help flavor milk. We finally got our hands on some and wanted to let you know what we thought. The straws come in packs of six and are available in three flavors: banana, strawberry and chocolate. However, because today is National Chocolate Milk Day, we're going to focus on the chocolate.

I started off by taking a pint of milk and dividing into three cups. Then I put one straw into each cup. The straws are rather unique, they're a bit larger than normal straws and have three small openings on each end. The openings are big enough to allow milk to pass through, but small enough that the chocolate "beads" don't escape.

To be honest, I was expecting it to taste overly sweet and weird, but it was surprisingly good and rather interesting. There was no clumping powder or syrupy mess, instead all the chocolate remained in the straw. In fact, you might even say it was like a chocolate filter. As the milk passed through, it slowly dissolved the beads and created a flavor infusion. After several minutes of the straw in my glass, my milk had a very light brown hue, and eventually the beads dissolved completely.

If you've got kids, or are one at heart, this will make a great afternoon surprise. The product, which is produced by Felfodi, was just announced at the Candy Expo and will hit the shelves soon.

Got Chocolate Milk?

I'm not a huge milk drinker, but every now and then I get a craving for a glass of frothy chocolate milk.

I'm not a huge milk drinker, but every now and then I get a craving for a glass of frothy chocolate milk. I've got one of those cravings this morning because I just realized it's National Chocolate Milk Day! In honor of today's celebration, here are my tips for the perfect glass of chocolate milk:

  • Use chocolate milk syrup instead of chocolate powder. Sometimes the powder doesn't dissolve fully making for some nasty chocolate chunks.
  • To make foamy chocolate milk, blend the cold milk and syrup in a blender until frothy.
  • For a bigger chocolate flavor, add more syrup. If there is too much chocolate add more milk.
  • Fill glass with coffee ice cubes for a mocha flavored variation.
  • Use vanilla extract, nutmeg, or cinnamon to jazz up chocolate milk.
  • Got a chocolate craving? FitSugar recommends sucking on chocolate milk ice cubes.

I'm all about Hershey's chocolate milk, but what about you, what kind of chocolate milk do you like to drink?
