Starbucks Takes Over the High Seas

Now that Starbucks is in 49 countries, its next step is expanding its presence to the high seas.

Now that Starbucks is in 49 countries, its next step is expanding its presence to the high seas. Yesterday brought news that the coffee chain will set sail with its first Starbucks outlet at sea, on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas. The move is undoubtedly geared toward consumers who count on Starbucks for a dependable morning drink.

Like any other location, the ship's store will be staffed with baristas, a full line of Starbucks drinks at what's being called "directionally similar" prices to those on land, and a wide array of Starbucks Via products. "We want that experience to be seamless," Starbucks executive Chris Carr told USA Today.

I must admit that I like the idea. What do you think of a Starbucks presence at sea?

What's Your Coffee Shop Waiting Line Stance?

Call it coffee shop wisdom: Behavioral analysts and Bloomberg Businessweek took a weekday morning to study how hundreds of people behave while waiting in (a now-longer) line for their coffee order at Starbucks.

Call it coffee shop wisdom: Behavioral analysts and Bloomberg Businessweek took a weekday morning to study how hundreds of people behave while waiting in (a now-longer) line for their coffee order at Starbucks. What the experts came up with was the concept that coffee-drinkers have one of 10 different coffee waiting-line stances. I conducted a brief but honest self-evaluation, and I'm equal parts Awkward Blackberryer and Counter Seducer. Which one are you?

I began my Starbucks Coffee College journey with a nostalgic visit to the original Starbucks, where the company first got its start. So it was only fitting that after numerous cupping sessions, a tour of the coffee roasting plant, and a few words from Howard Schultz himself, I toured Roy Street Coffee & Tea, one of the brand's very latest concepts. The café — one of three stores that have been renamed thus far — reflects the company's endeavors to reinstate a classic coffeehouse vibe. Were they able to pull it off? Decide for yourself when you keep reading.

Is Your Local Starbucks Closing?

By now you must have heard that Starbucks is closing 600 of its stateside coffee shops.

By now you must have heard that Starbucks is closing 600 of its stateside coffee shops. Last week Starbucks released the official list of the closing stores with a grand total of 616 closures. The closing stores are company-operated stand alone locations; no bookstore, super market, or airport Starbucks will be shuttered. A recent study by analyst Sharon Zackfia, found that 54 percent of the closing locations are within two miles of another Starbucks. The study also breakdowns the closures by region:

The central part of the country will lose about 13 percent of Starbucks stores that are operated directly by the Seattle company. The Southeast will lose 10 percent, the Northeast 8 percent and the West 5 percent.

After checking the list, I'm relieved to see that none of the Starbucks I frequent are closing. To find out which stores are vanishing in your neighborhood, check out the complete list and read more
