Did you know that granola is really easy to make? All you do is toss together a bunch of ingredients, stir, and bake. An hour later you'll have a healthy and delicious homemade breakfast or snack. It's so effortless that I've stopped buying granola at the store.
Another thing that's great about making it yourself is that you get to select the ingredients. Doesn't it always seem like there's one item in grocery store granola that you don't like? Not so with homemade granola. If you hate raisins, simply don't put them in! To check out the recipe I use — remember it's a guide, so just follow the proportions and substitute your favorite nuts and dried fruit — keep reading.
Just because it's the middle of the week doesn't mean you can't enjoy a delicious steak dinner. Steak is actually an excellent option for a last minute meal because it cooks quickly and can be easily seasoned with a simple sauce or, as in tonight's recipe, a scrumptious chutney. Chunks of sweet potato are mixed with a chunky, mango chutney and sweet, dried cranberries. The final result is a flavorful textured accompaniment to steaks. Here's the scenario: you are at home and hungry for food. You have to cook up something scrumptious for you and your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse/child/friend, but the ingredients you have on hand are limited.
You have leftover turkey breast from Sunday's dinner, a bag full of dried cranberries, and a couple stalks of fresh celery. Using these products, along with whatever you currently have on hand in your cupboard and refrigerator, what would you make?

I'm sure everyone and their mother has had ants on a log, but I thought I'd share a little twist on the recipe. Mine is called Red Ants on a Log or Crants on a Log.
Here's what you'll need:
- Washed celery stalks (trim off the end bits)
- Peanut butter or Almond butter
- Dried Cranberries
This is really complicated so pay close attention:
- Spread some nut butter on the celery stalks.
- Carefully place dried cranberries so they stick to the nut butter.
OK, I know this isn't some new breakthrough snack invention by any means, but it's definitely tasty and worth reminding you about. Since cranberries are one of the Top 5 Foods for Women, this is a delicious way to get those antioxidants. The peanut butter is also a great source of protein as is almond butter which also contains calcium. Plus this snack is fun and easy to make, and fun and easy to eat.
In the summertime, my mom would never bake anything. She said it was hot enough outside, and she didn't need a hot oven adding to it.
Now that I'm a mom, I see her point, so before it becomes full-on summer weather out there, why not bake some cookies? You can always freeze some to eat on those super hot days.
I learned this recipe for Cranberry and Walnut Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies from my mom, and it's always a hit with my girls, and when we go to parties and BBQs. Plus, since I recently told you how good walnuts and cranberries are for women, this is a delicious way to get your share. Give them a try and let me know what you think!

With high blood pressure in my family, I try to avoid foods that contain high amounts of sodium. But it's tough to find pre-packaged crunchy snacks that fit that bill.
Check out their Organic Trail Mix (it's so new - it's not even on their website yet). The packaging is clear so you can see the almonds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, whole cashews, raisins, dried cranberries, and dark chocolate chips - all ingredients prefaced with the word "organic."
On the back, they list each ingredient separately and explain why they chose them.
- Cashews contain 75% unsaturated fat so even though they're shaped like a kidney, they're good for your heart.
- Pumpkin seeds provide high levels of phytosterols, which are believed to lower cholesterol.
- Dried Cranberries are vibrant in both taste and antioxidant activity.
So snack away, knowing you're giving your body a healthy energy boost, with zero sodium.
