Prep Your Fridge Now For Thanksgiving

Chances are you only deep clean your fridge and freezer once or twice a year.

Chances are you only deep clean your fridge and freezer once or twice a year. With Thanksgiving only a few weeks away, I suggest you take the time now to prepare your fridge for the feast.

Get rid of old condiments or Tupperware and wipe down the shelves. That way, when you come home with a huge supply of ingredients for the big day, the fridge will be ready and waiting.

If your turkey is frozen, make sure to clear off an entire shelf for it to defrost. After you've enjoyed your meal, you can use that shelf to store leftovers!

Smarter Eats: Shop More, Buy Less

It is no joke that when overwhelmed by choices, we tend to have less willpower.

It is no joke that when overwhelmed by choices, we tend to have less willpower. Why order a salad from a restaurant menu full of variations of lasagna? When trying to curb unhealthy eating habits or to lose weight, a fridge full of food can be a mental minefield. Here's a simple trick: only buy enough groceries to last you for two to three days instead of stocking up on tons of food. Yes, you will be heading to the supermarket with a greater frequency, but your produce and meat will be super fresh. This way your fridge will only be filled with healthy choices, making it easier to stick to your meal plan. A couple more perks to this plan — the chances of forgotten food going bad will decrease because it will be easier to eat all that you have. When buying fewer groceries you can bike to the store and just fill up a backpack, burning some calories while stocking up.

How to Clean Your Fridge

Although it's a dirty job, someone has to clean out the refrigerator. Especially if you cook at home often, it's best to get rid of old milk before it spoils. I clean my fridge out once a week, but if you haven't checked the contents of the cheese drawer in a while, I suggest you start your Spring cleaning now. Here's what you should do to maintain a pristine, fresh-smelling fridge.

Love It or Hate It

Flatshare Fridge: Love It or Hate It?

Got roommates who steal your food?

Got roommates who steal your food? What you need is a flatshare fridge! This creative fridge consists of a base fridge and four stackable pieces that allow each user to have a private fridge. Made for the Electrolux Design Lab Competition by Austrian designer Stefan Buchberger, the flatshare — which comes in a variety of colors — can be customized to include a bottle opener or whiteboard. I think this fridge is incredibly clever, but wonder if the small compartment could hold all of my culinary needs. What do you think?

Cool Idea: Stacking Fridge Keeps Shared House Peace

When I lived with housemates, the main points of contention in our shared living situation involved the kitchen.

When I lived with housemates, the main points of contention in our shared living situation involved the kitchen. There were the piles of dirty dishes, and then there was the messy, rotten food-filled fridge. I like the idea of this stacking fridge from Electrolux, which allows people living in multiple-housemate situations to keep their personal food in each separate compartment. This would've saved me a lot of time cleaning out my housemates' way-beyond-expiration-date foodstuffs, had it been around five years ago. The fridge seems to still be in the concept stage, and I haven't turned up any information on energy efficiency yet (my guess is it's going to be an energy hog), so I can't give this design my endorsement until then. Do you live in a housemate situation? If so, would you be interested in a fridge like this, or do you think it might cause even more cleaning issues in your home?

Match the Fridge to Its Year of Manufacture

On today's date, Feb.

On today's date, Feb. 21, in 1994 Whirlpool began producing a new type of refrigerator. The more efficient and improved fridge functioned without freon — a component that is bad for the atmosphere. To commemorate the fridge's first step towards becoming green, I've put together a fun little quiz. I've found images of refrigerators throughout time and you have to choose what year they were manufactured in. Sound like fun? Take the quiz now!

Time to Clean Out Your Fridge

Today is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day.

Today is National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day. I think it's an opportune time to celebrate this holiday and prep your fridge for Thanksgiving by cleaning it out. To help you out, here are my suggestions on how to clean out the refrigerator:

  • Place a large, empty garbage bag next to your fridge. Have a couple smaller bags on hand for recyclables and leftovers.
  • Starting at the bottom with the vegetable drawers, look through your entire fridge. Throw away wilted, moldy, or old vegetables. If you have herbs that come in plastic containers, dump the herbs in the brown garbage bag and the container in the bag designated for recycling.

  • Empty tupperware with leftovers into plastic baggies and place these in the larger garbage bag. Taking the extra time to put the pasta, sauces, dips, etc. into a plastic baggy will ensure that the wetness doesn't seep through the larger bag or spill before you make it to the trash can.
  • Check yogurt, milk, and other dairy containers' expiration dates. If expired, remove from the fridge.
  • Dump out old, half full bottles of flat sodas, sparkling water, or wine.
  • Throw away smelly lunchmeats.

Healthy Eating Tip: How to Store Food so it Lasts

I truly enjoy going to the grocery store.

I truly enjoy going to the grocery store. I like to bring the girls along and use it as an educational errand and teach them that a piece of fruit and fruit snacks are not the same thing. I do get to take more time when I am by myself and really read all the nutritional labels - but that is another story.

If you spend a lot of money on your produce (especially if they are organic), you don't want them to go to waste. On average, American families end up trashing 14% of the food they buy because it spoils. Here are some tips on how to store your groceries so they can last long enough for you to enjoy them.

  • Apples give off a gas called ethylene that speeds up ripening in vegetables, so don't just throw your veggies and apples in the crisper all together. Store your apples separately.
  • Cold temps can actually damage some veggies and fruits like squash, tomatoes, and oranges. So keep these on your counter away from the cold.
  • If you love bananas but find that they turn mushy too quickly, store them in your fridge once they have ripened. The skin will turn brown, but the fruit inside will last much longer. If they are already overly ripe, peel them and then place them in a ziploc bag in the freezer. You can use them later to make homemade banana bread or a smoothie.
