Vegan Dessert: Chocolate-Covered Banana Almond Butter Bites

Vegan Chocolate-Covered Banana Almond Butter Bites

Ingredients

2 large ripe bananas
1/8 cup almond butter
1/8 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 cup dark chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Peel bananas and slice into quarter-inch pieces.
  2. Mix the almond butter and applesauce in a small dish. Smear the mixture on one banana slice and top it with another banana slice to make a sandwich.
  3. Place the banana sandwiches on a cutting board lined with parchment paper and freeze for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Before removing the bananas from the freezer, melt chocolate chips using the double-boiler method: place chocolate chips in a heat-safe glass or metal bowl, then place the bowl on top of a pot of boiling water. Stir continuously until the chips are completely melted.
  5. Take the banana sandwiches out of the freezer and dip them in the chocolate (keep it on the boiling water to prevent the chocolate from cooling). Place the sandwiches back on the paper. Once they're all covered in chocolate, pop them back in the freezer. They're ready to eat after 15 minutes.

Makes 20 mini sandwiches. See the nutritional information below for one chocolate-covered banana almond butter bite.

Tea Up With an Arnold Palmer Granita

Things I've learned so far this Summer: sipping on a glass of crisp and fruity Riesling makes hot days without air-conditioning worlds more bearable.

Things I've learned so far this Summer: sipping on a glass of crisp and fruity Riesling makes hot days without air-conditioning worlds more bearable. Fish sauce is an excellent and surprisingly subtle addition to everything from sweet-leaning salads to simple weeknight pastas. It's my go-to "secret" ingredient of choice these days. Oh, and you can make a granita out of (nearly) anything liquid. Riesling spritzer granita, anyone?

Scream For It! Coffee Ice Cream

Warmer weather means it's time for cool treats and our favorite frozen dessert is ice cream.

Warmer weather means it's time for cool treats and our favorite frozen dessert is ice cream. It's such a versatile dish; it can be made in countless flavors and can be used in endless desserts — that's why we're screaming for ice cream this Summer! In our new series, we hope to provide you with the best ice cream ideas.

Although you can purchase a pint at practically every gas station in America, I prefer to make homemade ice cream. It tastes so much better and once you've mastered the basic technique, it's not that hard to make, as the process is similar for most flavors.

You do need time: the base has to chill before being put into an ice cream maker and the final churned mixture should freeze a couple of hours before serving. To kick-start the series, I've got an amazing recipe for coffee ice cream. Get started on it today and enjoy a bowl or two this weekend. Here's the recipe.

Homemade Buttermilk Ice Cream Is Unlike Anything Else

A long time ago, I was watching Martha Stewart, and she mentioned that her favorite ice cream was buttermilk flavored.

A long time ago, I was watching Martha Stewart, and she mentioned that her favorite ice cream was buttermilk flavored. For some reason, I've always remembered this, and when I purchased an ice cream maker, I was determined to make it. However, I got distracted by more glamorous flavors, strawberry, mint chip, vanilla bean, and only recently remembered my desire to try Martha's buttermilk ice cream.

Boy, does Martha know what she is talking about: this was one of the best ice creams I've ever tasted. It's creamy, but sorbet-like, tangy, and rich. One guest described it like frozen pound cake. Another simply could not stop mmm-ing. And me? I'm still dreaming of this lusciously wonderful ice cream. Although you need an ice cream maker, the recipe is shockingly easy. Come Party With Me: Memorial Day Barbecue — Dessert

As a child, one of my favorite ice cream truck treats was the Drumstick.

As a child, one of my favorite ice cream truck treats was the Drumstick. I loved the classic combination of vanilla ice cream, hard chocolate shell, and crunchy waffle cone. The Drumstick has always reminded me of Summer, so when I came across this recipe for a homemade take on the frozen dessert, I decided it would be perfect to serve at a Memorial Day barbecue. To prevent the ice cream from seeping out of the bottom, the cones are stuffed with malt balls. How clever is that? Get the recipe, which must be made in advance, when you read more

Frozen Trailer: Scary or Silly?

Clearly we all have fears about being left behind in less-than-ideal conditions — remember shark-infested horror Open Water?

Clearly we all have fears about being left behind in less-than-ideal conditions — remember shark-infested horror Open Water? Frozen also plays on that fear, only the conditions are icy, cold snow. Three skiers (including Gossip Girl's Kevin Zegers) get stuck on a chairlift on their way up a mountain when it stops, stranding them and leaving them to face uncertainty (and creepy things, naturally).

Maybe you have to be seriously paranoid about skiing or snowboarding to feel the chill in this trailer, but it's just not frightening me like most scary movie trailers would (but the end does gross me out). What do you think — is the Frozen trailer scary or silly?

Let's Dish: What Are Your Favorite Frozen Treats?

Right before the Fourth, I shed some light on the best foods to make when it's hot outside — including Summer-perfect desserts like frosty mojito cakes and spicy cantaloupe paletas.

Right before the Fourth, I shed some light on the best foods to make when it's hot outside — including Summer-perfect desserts like frosty mojito cakes and spicy cantaloupe paletas. But my favorite frozen confections are the ones that remind me of my childhood — like red grapes straight out of the freezer and those triangle-shaped Minute Maid push pops (which, sadly, I haven't come across in ages). As for icy cocktails, I can never turn down a subzero piña colada. What are your favorite things to enjoy that are frozen?

Have Your Mint Popsicles and Eat the Stick Too!

Recently we brainstormed the ultimate Popsicle.

Recently we brainstormed the ultimate Popsicle. In my ideal Popsicle, the pesky wooden stick would be replaced with something deliciously edible. I decided to experiment with Pepperidge Farm Pirouettes, a rolled, wafer cookie with cream filling, using the cookie as the stick. The result is an easy and entirely edible Popsicle, inspired by one of my favorite Girl Scout Cookies — Thin Mints! Making the Popsicles was simple: I filled small Dixie cups with ice cream and gently inserted the cookie stick. The chocolate coating proved more difficult. I intended to quickly dip the Popsicles in melted chocolate and crushed mint cookies.

Unfortunately, the chocolate froze faster than I could dip and roll, so I opted for a simple chocolate coating. The wafer sticks come in four flavors, so feel free to choose your favorite cookie/ice cream combination. To learn the technique, read more
