With less than 24 hours until Thanksgiving dinner, it's a mad dash to greet your guests while putting the finishing touches on your feast. It's likely that you've forgotten to pick up an essential ingredient or two or three, but now is not the time to panic. If the grocery aisles are beginning to look like a dizzying kaleidoscope, here's is a quick, cost-effective guide to help you find the best consumer-approved, quick, or ready-made Thanksgiving products.

Pies — Opt for a fresh Whole Foods pecan pie ($11) with a flaky and buttery crust, toasted pecans, and a caramelized filling. Otherwise go with an equally pleasing frozen pie option like Marie Callender's Dutch Apple Pie ($9) or Trader Joe's Pumpkin Pie ($5).

Mashed Potatoes — Out of 12 other store-bought mashed potatoes, Bob Evans Original ($5) scored the highest in Consumer Reports and is noted for its authentic flavor, creaminess, and peppery flavor.

I'm Asking: What's on Your Grocery List?

We always talk about saving money on groceries, but I'm wondering what are the common staples you reach for in the grocery store.

We always talk about saving money on groceries, but I'm wondering what are the common staples you reach for in the grocery store. I always get items like milk, eggs, bread, chicken, fish, bananas, oranges, and some fresh vegetables like broccoli, green beans, or lettuce. To satisfy my soda addiction, I occasionally buy some sparkling water, and once in a while I reach for some cheese! As you can see, I don't really buy processed meats or frozen foods.

I know all of us have different diets, but I'm interested to know what the typical grocery list looks like. What do you reach for when your browsing the aisles of your local grocery store? Don't be afraid to add your whole list!

Speak Up: What Healthy Staples Are on Your Grocery List?

I'm the one who does the grocery shopping in the family, because, well, I love it.

I'm the one who does the grocery shopping in the family, because, well, I love it. Since eating healthy is such an important part of who I am, I take great pride in choosing bell peppers with the perfect hue of deep red, bananas that have the least amount of imperfections, and avocados that are almost at peak ripeness. I've sent my hubby to the store, but even with a list, he always seems to forget some of the essentials.

Spinach, carrots, peppers, and cucumbers for salads are staples on my list, as well as fresh fruits to nosh on such as bananas and pears. Those are musts for our household. What about you?

Diet Tip: Make a Grocery List

If you are watching what you eat, counting calories or dieting, a trip to the grocery can be really challenging.

If you are watching what you eat, counting calories or dieting, a trip to the grocery can be really challenging. All those tempting foods shelved right at eye level by your strategic grocer. This is why you need to make a grocery list and stick to it! No picking up those potato chips, which are marked down and prominently displayed at the end of an aisle. Nope. Just follow your list and you will leave the supermarket with the foods you need and not random foods loaded with empty calories!

Making a list and checking it twice is not just for St. Nick. You can and should do it too. It is really helpful if you can plan a few meals while you make your list. That way you will head home with all the necessary ingredients.

When it comes to grocery shopping I find it is also helpful to just shop the perimeter and to avoid shopping hungry.

Supermarket Smarts: Make a List

I love grocery shopping.

I love grocery shopping. OK I confess: I love all kinds of shopping, grocery included. I would get super excited when my dad would invite me to purchase the food with him. He taught me his organized system for grocery shopping and now I can maneuver my way through the store swiftly and efficiently. Start by making a list of all of the ingredients you need. The most important thing about this list is to arrange it in sections by thinking of the sections of a grocery store. Put all of your produce on one portion of the page, dairy on another, meats on another, pantry goods in another, and so on and so forth. If you are familiar with your grocery store lay out create your list according to the market's floor plan. At my Safeway I like to start in the produce section and make my way through the back of the store stopping to pick up chicken, bacon, frozen goods, milk, cheese, wine, and bread along the way. Having a list in your hands will also keep you from purchasing impulse foods that aren't good for your wallet or your weight. Once you get used to shopping with your list you will realize that you can be in and out of the grocery store in no time and you might just find you actually enjoy your walks down the super market aisles.

Come Party With Me

Come Party WIth Me: Golden Globes Viewing - Music and More

My Golden Globes Viewing party is just three short days away.

My Golden Globes Viewing party is just three short days away. I'm so excited I feel as though I really am attending the show! Things have come together quite nicely, my girlfriend's have already received their invites, the menu and drinks are planned, and the decorations are in order. I'm ready to party, but there is one tiny aspect left, the music.

Since this party revolves around watching a show on TV, music is not super important. Instead of fretting about the music, make arrangements to view the show on your largest and best television. There needs to be comfortable seating for all of your guests and maybe a blanket or two in case the girls want to curl up after dinner.

This party doesn't need a playlist, it needs a grocery list and I've put one together for us. If you plan on hosting my Golden Globe party, be sure to check out the grocery list. read more
