Happy Hour: Hot Buttered Rum

Can't fathom sipping an iced cocktail as the temperature continues dipping?

Hot Buttered RumCan't fathom sipping an iced cocktail as the temperature continues dipping? Then settle in with a batch of steamy buttered rum instead — it'll warm you to the core, even in bone-chillingly cold climes. This recipe for hot buttered rum is the best I've ever had, in part because it calls for a spiced butter as its base.

This recipe also incorporates ground ginger, grated orange zest, and a fresh squeeze of orange juice for zing at the very end; all of these truly round out the typical wintry spice notes. I recommend using a good-quality spiced rum, like Cruzan's 9 Spiced Rum, to boost flavor even further. Cuddle up to a cup when you read on.

Happy Hour: Hot Buttered Rum

Tomorrow, Jan.17, is National Hot Buttered Rum day.

Tomorrow, Jan.17, is National Hot Buttered Rum day. To celebrate, I'm heading over to my friend H. Joseph Ehrmann's bar, Elixir, in San Francisco's Mission district. They're having a little party, and hot buttered rums are the highlight. If you don't live in SF, no worries: H has shared his recipe with us, so you can make it in the comforts of your cozy kitchen! While some variations call for a batter, this recipe is less traditional. It combines hot water with butter, whole cloves, and cinnamon sticks. The final concoction is extra-rich in spice with a creamy texture and soothing taste. According to H, it's best enjoyed "in a chilled room, around 40 degrees Fahrenheit."

Sounds like it would be the perfect cocktail after a day of skiing or traveling, so to get the recipe, read more

DIY: A Brown Sugar Body Scrub Inspired by a Winter Cocktail

A few weeks ago my friend decided to make hot buttered rum on a whim.

A few weeks ago my friend decided to make hot buttered rum on a whim. None of us had ever had it, and it sounded kind of gross... yet somehow appealing. (YumSugar has a recipe.) Is it good? It was a mixed bag on that one, but the batter itself served as my inspiration for this brown sugar scrub. Oh, and I just found out that National Hot Buttered Rum Day is this Saturday. Who knew? Yum even has a fun quiz all about this old school drink. Check out some pics below, along with my recipe, too.

Bella's Booze-Free Hot Buttered Rum Brown Sugar Body Scrub:

  • Mix together 1/2 cup brown sugar; 1/4 cup almond oil (olive oil would work, too); a dash of ground cinnamon or cinnamon essential oil; and a dash of ground nutmeg or nutmeg essential oil. Apply. Optional: Add a dash of rum extract — Oh, I suppose you could get the real stuff out and mix up a little rum cocktail for yourself, too. Whee!

Happy Hour: Hot Buttered Rum

After putting together a quiz about hot buttered rum, I couldn't let the weekend pass without making a batch.

After putting together a quiz about hot buttered rum, I couldn't let the weekend pass without making a batch. So I decided to experiment with a hot buttered rum batter recipe. The batter — a mixture of butter, powdered and brown sugar, spices, and melted ice cream — is frozen and can be used at anytime, To make the toddy, rum and boiling water are added to a heaping tablespoon of batter. This was incredibly easy to make, with a rich, warming, not-too-sweet taste. In fact writing this has got me craving one right now! For the recipe, read more
