Come Party With Me: Winter Picnic — Drinks

Every picnic deserves a special drink, and for a Winter picnic, I recommend a warm cocktail like a hot toddy.

Every picnic deserves a special drink, and for a Winter picnic, I recommend a warm cocktail like a hot toddy. This classic libation is a combination of hot water, whiskey, lemon juice, and honey.

Prep the beverage at home by juicing the lemons and combining the liquid with honey, sugar, anise, and cloves.

Then, at your party destination, heat water on the grill and pour into mugs with the whiskey and the prepared honey-lemon mixture. Sound like fun? Check out the recipe now.

Toast to a Healthy Holiday With Hot Toddys

It's cold outside and I'm feeling festive, and something about warm drinks filled with Winter spices gets me every time!

It's cold outside and I'm feeling festive, and something about warm drinks filled with Winter spices gets me every time! Since Winter is not going away any time soon, neither is the temptation of an eggnog habit. But, instead of reaching for fat-filled boozy eggnog, hot buttered rum, or spiked hot chocolate, make yourself a hot toddy instead. This classic cold-weather warmer has all the same seasonal spices of eggnog and pumpkin pie, but with way fewer calories. And it's even been known to knock out a cold or two; perhaps it's the citrus, honey, and good-for-you cinnamon at work? Whatever it is, the hot toddy is one of team FitSugar's favorite ways to imbibe over the holidays minus the guilt.

Love It or Hate It

Hot Cocktails: Love Them or Hate Them?

During the process of making yesterday's hot rum, pineapple, and maple toddy, it occurred to me that some of you might not enjoy hot cocktails.

During the process of making yesterday's hot rum, pineapple, and maple toddy, it occurred to me that some of you might not enjoy hot cocktails. From buttered rum to mulled punch to classic whiskey toddies, I'm a fan of warm guzzlers, especially during chilly weather. After all, they're no different from coffee and tea, which I drink daily, even in the Summer. What about you?

Happy Hour: Hot Rum, Pineapple, and Maple Toddy

Ever since two Fridays ago, I've been chained to my television watching the Vancouver Olympics.

Ever since two Fridays ago, I've been chained to my television watching the Vancouver Olympics. I'm not much of a sports spectator, but I have a soft spot for stories of sacrifice and redemption, and the Winter games have plenty of those.

Last night, I watched the USA face off against Canada in the hockey rink. The match had plenty of excitement and energy — plus those Canadian hotties in their maple leaf uniforms weren't too hard on the eyes, either.

I took it all in with a tipple that couldn't have been more fitting: a play on the hot toddy that's laced with cinnamon, pineapple, and the country's oh-so-emblematic maple syrup. To be the best Olympics couch cheerleader you can be, get the recipe.

Happy Hour: Hot Toddy

After years of living in San Francisco, I've made peace with the constant, bone-chilling wet weather.

After years of living in San Francisco, I've made peace with the constant, bone-chilling wet weather. But there are still days — like this overcast Monday morning — when I can't seem to get warm, even after several cups of hot coffee. That's when I pine for a hot toddy, the only cold-weather warmer that can shake off chills this fierce.

I learned how to make this last year while sitting at the bar of a local bistro, Café Claude. After drinking his specialty, I was instantly toasty — and the bartender, David, was kind enough to share his recipe. Now I'm passing along that soothing and fuzzy feeling to you! Happy Hour: Sweeney (Hottie) Toddy

Now that Fall is here we can start to think about cold-weather cocktails, especially the warming toddy.

Now that Fall is here we can start to think about cold-weather cocktails, especially the warming toddy. With its burnt orange color, caramelized sugar rim, and creative name, this modern variation of the classic drink is not your grandmother's nightcap. Made with rum and Canton Ginger Liquor, it's delicious and surprisingly easy to drink. Created especially for my birthday party, by superstar bartender Aaron Smith, of 15 Romolo, the Sweeney (Hottie) Toddy is also a wonderful concoction for a Halloween party. Lighting the glass on fire to caramelize the rim makes for a fabulous party trick! Learn how it's done and read more

Happy Hour: Hot Buttered Rum

After putting together a quiz about hot buttered rum, I couldn't let the weekend pass without making a batch.

After putting together a quiz about hot buttered rum, I couldn't let the weekend pass without making a batch. So I decided to experiment with a hot buttered rum batter recipe. The batter — a mixture of butter, powdered and brown sugar, spices, and melted ice cream — is frozen and can be used at anytime, To make the toddy, rum and boiling water are added to a heaping tablespoon of batter. This was incredibly easy to make, with a rich, warming, not-too-sweet taste. In fact writing this has got me craving one right now! For the recipe, read more

National Hot Toddy Day

Today is National Hot Toddy Day (I may like saying National Hot Toddy Day more than I liked saying National Roast Suckling Pig Day)!

Today is National Hot Toddy Day (I may like saying National Hot Toddy Day more than I liked saying National Roast Suckling Pig Day)! A hot toddy is a warm cocktail that I like to drink when I'm in the mountains of Aspen. Okay, so I've never been to Aspen, but I imagine that a hot toddy would be the ideal drink on a snowy afternoon at a ski lodge. However, it would also make a great drink on any cold, winter day. So, instead of having your usual afternoon coffee or tea, have a hot toddy. For the recipe, read more
