Happy Hour: Jell-O Shots Three Ways

I seriously thought I'd make it out of my 20s without ever having made Jell-O shots.

I seriously thought I'd make it out of my 20s without ever having made Jell-O shots. However, sometimes a party calls for a little extra fun.

Last week I was pulled aside and asked if I could make 60 Jell-O shots by the next day. Being YumSugar, I said sure thing, no problem; it wasn't until later that I went into panic mode. Jell-O shots? Seriously? How do I make them? What's the correct ratio? What do I serve them in? After a few minutes on Google, the panic went away, and soon I had several unpredictable flavors and a clever serving tip. So I bought my supplies, spent an hour in the kitchen, and the next day there were Jell-O shots in three flavors: margarita, classic cherry, and spiked tropical punch.

Flashback: Lame Jello Ad from the 60's

And when I say "lame" I mean "racist."

And when I say "lame" I mean "racist." The premise of this commercial is that a poor rittle Chinese baby tries to eat her "laspberry" Jerro with her chopsticks, and can't, of course, so she needs to be introduced to the more advanced Western spoon. Or maybe the point of the ad is to make fun of Asian people speaking English as a second language. The 60s and 70s were not great times for Asian-Americans on television. Check this out, too. (This makes me long for the intelligence of commercials featuring Paris Hilton eating a burger while washing a car...)

Cute Pre-Halloween Dessert: Edible Snails

I'm not into making children's food particularly kid friendly.

I'm not into making children's food particularly kid friendly. I don't like sandwiches that are cut into cute shapes with cookie cutters, or eggs that are decorated with veggies to resemble a smiley face. However when I saw these adorable edible snails — made from marshmallow and jello — I thought they would make a fabulous pre-Halloween dessert! Kids will especially enjoy these because finally, playing with food is acceptable. They are a fun dessert to bring to a potluck, party, or dinner, so get the recipe now, just read more

Should Jello Bring Back Jello 1-2-3 ?

Friends and family members are constantly calling me up with questions involving food, recipes, and parties.

Friends and family members are constantly calling me up with questions involving food, recipes, and parties. So when my bff Emily turned to me recently and asked Do you have a recipe for...- I was confident I would have (or have access to) the recipe she was seeking. However this time she threw a curve-ball and stumped me. - Jello 1-2-3? Jello 1-2-3? The name sounded vaguely familiar, a hazy memory from a lost time. Do you know what I'm talking about reader? If you are under the age of 15 you most likely don't, however if you're older, you may remember a type of Jello that separates into 3 layers of Jello at 3 very different textures. The bottom layer is Jello, while the middle layer is more like a Jello mousse or custard and the top layer is a Jello foam. Em and I did some research and discovered that there is actually an underground cult movement that is begging Jello to bring back its beloved Jello 1-2-3 (which was found on supermarket shelves until 1996) and no mention of the fun dessert on the official Jello website. Emily and I gladly signed the petition as we were filled with nostalgia for a dessert my dad used to make us when we were in the fourth grade. What do you think?
