Magnolia Cupcakes Soon to Be Just a Click Away
Cupcake fans rejoice! The iconic New York City bakery Magnolia, whose cupcakes were made famous by Sex and the City, has announced plans of expansion. The cupcakery hopes to open new stores in New York, New Jersey, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago — and it's just signed a lease for a massive production facility in Harlem that will allow it to sell cupcakes online.
In Spring of 2011, the online Magnolia store will launch; it will sell not only the iconic cupcakes, but branded merchandise as well. No details as to how much the cupcakes will cost, but one can imagine that the pastel-frosted cakes won't be cheap. How much are you willing to spend on a cupcake? Do you order baked goods online?

Yummy Link: Magnolia Bakery Shut Down by the Dept. of Health
In a story that's still developing, the Department of Health has shut down the famous Magnolia Bakery. Apparently it's a lack of sinks - and not rats - that has caused the shut down. Guess you'll just have to make Magnolia cupcakes at home until it reopens.
Update: Magnolia has issued an official statement stating that they've operated for 10 years without this sink.
Update 2: The Department of Health has allowed Magnolia to reopen now that they've installed a new sink.

Whoa There Cupcake!
Leave it to YumSugar to put cupcakes on my brain once again. Did you know she bakes cupcakes and brings them in for the office to sample? Ah, I digress... However she did recently point out a rather interesting report from NPR and the Diet Detective himself, Charles Stewart Platkin, on cupcakes.
Platkin believes that while cupcakes are incredibly delicious, we are not fully aware of their wrath - calorie wise. He took on NYC's finest bakeries, Magnolia (yum) and Crumbs (double yum) and put them against notable grocery heavyweight Hostess. Here are his findings:
![]() |
| The Crumbs vanilla cupcake (left) has 780 calories and nearly 36 grams of fat. Magnolia's comparatively dainty version has 389 calories and nearly 19 grams of fat. |
OK, so what about when compared to Hostess? To find out, read more
Edible Groundhogs
Today, in case you forgot, is Groundhog Day. If you have young kids explain the concept to them and make these cute little cupcakes together. It can be like a Friday afternoon treat. Start with your favorite cupcake recipe, (or use Magnolia Bakery Vanilla Cupcakes) stick a chocolate candy bar (my suggestion: a mini twix) up right in the baked and cooled cupcake. Spread your favorite frosting to hold the candy in place. To make the groundhog's eyes and tooth, cut a tiny piece of white jelly bean and glue into place with frosting. Dot with black decorators gel or melted chocolate. Cut a triangle noise from a watermelon shaped sour candy and use mini brown M&M's for adorable itsy-bitsy edible ears and cheeks. Sprinkle chocolate cookie crumb "dirt" around the groundhog. Don't forget to take a picture of your groundhog cupcakes and post in the Savory Sights group on TeamSugar to share your delightful dessert with us all.
Enjoy and Happy Groundhog Day!
