Think you've seen (and devoured) kale chips every which way? Think again. Slathered in smoky-savory bacon drippings and tossed with maple sugar, these snappy snacks are far from conventional in a good — nay, great — way. Sure, it may seem a bit counterintuitive to dress the hearty and oh-so-wholesome green with slightly naughty ingredients, but these still remain a glimmer of virtue, while tasting pretty darn close to candied bacon. So, get over any misguided reservations you may have and try out the recipe yourself.
Can you imagine the holiday season without warming seasonings like vanilla, maple, pumpkin, and cinnamon? We wouldn't want to! It seems like the two are practically interchangeable, which is why we always look forward to sampling seasonal offerings from our favorite food companies. Most recently, Vermont Butter & Cheese Creamery sent us two new products for the holidays: Madagascar Vanilla Crème Fraîche and Cultured Butter With Sea Salt and Maple. Starting Nov. 1, these dairy goods will be exclusively available at Whole Foods Market. We taste tested the products along with Whitney's Middlebury Maple Castleton Crackers from the artisanal cracker company in Vermont. Find out whether you should splurge on the seasonal flavors or skip them.
Fast forward four years and I click over to Epicurious and am met by a blast from the past — the blueberry cupcakes! With July and our blueberry month coming to an end, I took it as a sign and made them.
Now I'm telling you: these cupcakes are delicious! They're perfectly balanced, sweet but not overly so, with a hint of lemon adding a delightful tartness. The frosting is a rich maple buttercream that pairs well with the fluffy moist cake. If you need a special dessert, consider these cupcakes. Here's the recipe.

If you're in Northern California, you may find yourself faced with the tough decision of choosing between three of life's greatest indulgences. We'll be getting cocoa butter and sugar high at the San Francisco International Chocolate Salon, and saying cheese at California's Artisan Cheese Festival. Maybe we'll see you there! Let us know what events you're attending this weekend — and feel free to add any other food events below.
- Del Mar, CA: Family Winemakers of California Tasting 2009 — Mar. 17
- Green Bay, WI: US Championship Cheese Contest — Mar. 17-19
- New York, NY: NYC Restaurant Week — Mar. 17-20

If, like me, one of your favorite parts of Fall is taking in the gorgeous colors of leaves, you might want to consider purchasing trees for your yard that are known for their Fall colors. For instance, if you love brilliant, fiery red tones, you might want to check out the Scarlet Jewell, a variety of maple tree that gives you bright red color typically two weeks ahead of other maple trees. Growing to a height of 70 feet and a width of 30 feet, its leaves are dark green in the Summer, and it grows in zones 3-7, preferring moist, slightly acidic soil.

This week's cupcake comes from A Cat In the Kitchen. Her adorable Totoro topped cupcakes are wonderfully cute and made me squeal out loud. The cupcakes are actually maple, pecan and apple — perfect for the fall — and are topped with a sugar fondant/paste and decorated with a food pen. I love all the detail in them. They're really almost too cute to eat! Well, almost...
