Fall in Love With Lemon-Curd-Laced Cupcakes

I'll pick a slice of cherry pie over a cupcake any day, with one exception: these lemon-curd-filled cupcakes.

I'll pick a slice of cherry pie over a cupcake any day, with one exception: these lemon-curd-filled cupcakes. Pleasantly dense cream cheese pound cake flecked with lemon zest would make for a killer cake without further adornment, but velvety lemon curd is the real star here.

Thankfully (or dangerously), they're not too tricky to make, so I can whip them up with regularity. Just remember not to fill them with lemon curd more than four hours before serving as the lemon curd will start to leach into the cake, marring their otherwise lovely appearance.

Keep reading to learn how to prep them ahead of time — and, of course, for the recipe.

The Basics: Pound Cake

Although it can be enjoyed all year long, I crave pound cake during the warmer months.

Although it can be enjoyed all year long, I crave pound cake during the warmer months. Thick slices are transformed into a spectacular dessert when caramelized on the grill. Thin pieces become moist when smothered with fresh berries and fluffy whipped cream. Chunks can be layered with custard and stone fruit in a trifle or simply topped with ice cream and sauce in a sundae. With classic pound cake, the dessert possibilities are endless! Traditionally a pound cake was made with a pound each of flour, sugar, and butter, but nowadays, the recipe is a little different. Once you've mastered the technique you can experiment not only with the final preparations, but with mix-ins as well. Stir in fresh citrus zest, different flavored extracts or liqueurs, chocolate chips, etc. But first: here's the basic recipe.

Burning Question: How Did Pound Cake Get Its Name?

I love pound cake, and ever since I've been old enough to eat it, I've wondered: where did it get that name?

I love pound cake, and ever since I've been old enough to eat it, I've wondered: where did it get that name?

In my childhood I speculated if it weighed a pound, or whether it would cause me to put on a pound or two. But that's actually not where the name comes from. Pound cake, which originated in Europe in the first half of the 18th century, initially weighed four pounds. That's because it called for a pound of each of four ingredients — flour, butter, eggs, and sugar — hence the name.

The recipe produced something far larger than what a modern-day family would consume — an amount over twice the volume of most loaf pans. Traditional recipes, therefore, preserve the simple ratio, but serve a much smaller quantity than the original recipe; in contemporary times, most have modified the recipe for a lighter, richer dessert with a prominent butter flavor. In France, where some argue the pound cake originated, the name of the original cake has stuck as well. There, it's called quatre-quarts, or "four quarts," a quart referring to a pound.

Come Party With Me: Vegan Dinner — Dessert

Just because they don't eat meat or diary, doesn't mean vegans don't enjoy sweets.

Just because they don't eat meat or diary, doesn't mean vegans don't enjoy sweets. When hosting a vegan dinner — like the one I'm making for my detoxing sister and friends this weekend — do serve dessert.

Instead of using eggs, this easy vanilla pound cake with lime glaze, calls for silken tofu. It's a good substitute for vegan baked goods that results in a moist, soft-textured cake.

The recipe is adaptable, if you don't have limes on hand, simply use lemons or orange as any citrus goes well with pound cake. To look at the make-in-advance recipe, read more

Peachy Keen Pound Cake

A few weeks ago, a large bag of ripe white peaches arrived at the Sugar HQ. We ate as many as we could, but on Friday afternoon I noticed that there were quite a few left. Knowing that they wouldn't last the weekend, I brought them home and decided to make a sweet breakfast treat for the office.I found a recipe for a peach pound cake, and while not particularly healthy, it was absolutely delicious. The peaches added a nice fragrant flavor, and the yogurt allowed for a perfectly moist crumb. To get the recipe, just read more

Want Fries With That Hot Dog Cake?

When I found out that today is Hot Dog Day, I knew I had to share this fun creation.

When I found out that today is Hot Dog Day, I knew I had to share this fun creation. It really takes "semi-homemade" and pushes it to the next level, everything can be bought, but the end result is completely unique. The Hot Dog and Fries Cake is a completely edible, ridiculously sweet cake shaped to look like a hot dog in a bun and french fries. All you need is a loaf cake, a few Twinkies, red frosting, yellow icing, red icing and some green fruit. If you'd rather not use Twinkies, substitute with different kind of cake in the center. Either way, your little ones — and big ones too — are going to love this treat.

Oh To Invent A Dessert!

254 years ago on today's date, an American physician named Benjamin Thompson, Count von Rumford (some name, huh?) was born.

254 years ago on today's date, an American physician named Benjamin Thompson, Count von Rumford (some name, huh?) was born. He invented a pressure cooker kitchen stove thing-a-ma-jig and more importantly is credited with creating Baked Alaska (how awesome would it be if you invented a dessert???). Baked Alaska is a dessert composed of a sponge cake topped with a layer of ice cream. Instead of frosting the cake, you blanket it with a thick coating of meringue. Then it is baked in the oven until the meringue is caramelized and golden brown - about five minutes. The meringue insulates the ice cream and prevents it from melting. The end result is a spectacular and show-stopping dessert. To experiment with baked Alaska in your kitchen, in honor of old Count Rumford's birthday, just read more
