Wedding Etiquette: Who Should Be Invited to the Rehearsal Dinner?

Between engagement parties, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, and all the day-of festivities, it can be difficult to know who exactly needs to be invited to each wedding event.

Between engagement parties, bridal showers, bachelorette parties, and all the day-of festivities, it can be difficult to know who exactly needs to be invited to each wedding event. The rehearsal dinner can be an especially gray area — who should host? Who should be invited? Traditionally, the groom's parents take care of the rehearsal dinner, but the two sets of parents can also split the cost, or the bride and groom can opt to pay themselves. Not sure who to invite? We're clearing things up with answers to the most common guest list questions.

Do I need to invite all the out-of-town guests?
That's entirely up to you, but it is a common practice. If you're planning a smaller wedding or there aren't many traveling guests, then it's a great way to spend more time with the people you rarely see. On the other hand, if it's a large destination wedding or several guests will be coming into town, it may be best to streamline your rehearsal dinner guest list.

Who absolutely must be invited?
Although the list can be flexible, you should definitely include the bridal party plus their dates, both immediate families, and grandparents. From there, see what kind of numbers your budget and venue will allow, then add to the group as you wish. Stick with a hard-and-fast rule — no cousins, no family friends, etc. — to keep things fair and avoid offending any loved ones.

Do we need to send invitations?
In general, it's a smart move, if only to get a head count for both the host and the caterer. Depending on the formality of the affair, there's no need to go all-out with the invitation expense. If it's an upscale event, sure, keep things classy with a nicer invitation. But if you're hoping to minimize costs, it's perfectly OK to go with a simple card or evite that outlines the basics.

5 Savvy Rehearsal Dinner Alternatives

Traditionally, the groom's parents pay for the rehearsal dinner.

Traditionally, the groom's parents pay for the rehearsal dinner. But if you and your groom are paying for your own nuptials, or if both families are contributing, why not buck tradition with the rehearsal dinner too? The event, typically held the night before the wedding, doesn't have to be a blowout, sit-down dinner for all of the out of town guests — especially if you're having a smaller wedding. Here are five ideas for nontraditional rehearsal dinner alternatives that will entertain your guests while keeping costs down.

For Your Rehearsal Dinner, Go Moroccan!

Your wedding reception is certainly the more formal of your celebratory events taking place around the wedding itself. The evening before, welcome friends from out of town, close family members, and your bridal party with a dinner that’s out of the ordinary and fun. Pick a theme and go with it: Italian, Moroccan, Greek, or even a down-home Texas BBQ. A relaxed and casual environment creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere that helps break the ice. In fact, it will make the wedding itself that much better.

Come Party With Me: Rehearsal Dinner — The Look

With a few simple touches, you can transform an ordinary backyard into a chic setting for the perfect rehearsal dinner.

With a few simple touches, you can transform an ordinary backyard into a chic setting for the perfect rehearsal dinner.

Start by placing tiki torches along the entryway and edge of the yard. Hang round lanterns from large tree branches and line low bushes with small twinkling Christmas lights. Cover the table with a pretty printed cloth. Place outdoor glass ice buckets in various locations throughout the space (this will create a flow and promote mingling). Fill the buckets with ice, beer, and wine, and let guests help themselves to the beverages.

Pass the pizza on circular serving platters and serve the signature cocktail in blue glass tumblers.

Create customized napkins that say the bride and groom's names, but leave the wedding date off, so the napkins can be used at the rehearsal dinner, wedding reception, and any future parties the couple may host. For a romantic, welcoming glow, light lots of votives. Save the stunning floral arrangements for the wedding; instead opt for a single vase filled with fragrant flowers.

Come Party With Me: Rehearsal Dinner — Drinks

At a rehearsal dinner, don't go overboard with the alcohol.

At a rehearsal dinner, don't go overboard with the alcohol. The last thing you'll (whether you're the bride, maid of honor, or a guest) want to deal with on the big day is a hangover. Don't offer a full bar, instead tempt guests with one cocktail, beer, wine, and sodas. When making special toasts, sip sparkling wine. For Ronda's backyard soirée, I'm making a batch of limoncello spritzers with mint.

The light fizzy concoction is festive and fits with the relaxed Italian theme. This delightful cooler is a refreshing start to any Summer menu, so get the recipe now and read more

When planning your rehearsal dinner, take into consideration the theme of the wedding.

When planning your rehearsal dinner, take into consideration the theme of the wedding. If you're having a black tie big day, don't host an equally formal rehearsal dinner. Instead throw a laid back luau, festive hoedown, or in the case of my girlfriend, Ronda, a backyard grilled pizza party. Simply put, the rehearsal dinner should not upstage the wedding reception. For this reason, avoid serving cake.

Instead, offer guests a delightfully crisp frosted cookie like these Italian-inspired chocolate hazelnut spiced cookies. They are ideal for a party because they can be made up to four days in advance. Check out the scrumptious recipe when you read more

Come Party With Me: Rehearsal Dinner — Menu

Instead of having her rehearsal dinner at a restaurant, my girlfriend Ronda has decided to host it in her parents' backyard.

Instead of having her rehearsal dinner at a restaurant, my girlfriend Ronda has decided to host it in her parents' backyard. To save money, the event won't be a formal sit-down affair, but rather a casual alfresco cocktail party with heavy appetizers. The easy menu is inspired by Italy.

First set up a huge station with store-bought charcuterie, cheese, olives, and antipasto. Next, give classic Caesar salad a portable makeover by serving on skewers. Ask a family friend to man the grill and cook up an assortment of vegetarian — asparagus and sun dried tomato, zucchini, margherita, and fontina olive — grilled pizzas. Prepare the toppings and dough in advance.

All the griller has to do is assemble and make the pizzas. Once cooked, pass around and offer to guests. To check out these recipes, read more
