Feeling Snacky? Cracker Breakdown

When I'm craving something salty and crunchy, crackers can be a healthier choice than chips.

When I'm craving something salty and crunchy, crackers can be a healthier choice than chips. I love nibbling them on their own, dipped in hummus, or topped with cheese and sliced apples. Not all crackers are created equally though. Some will make you drop your cracker when you find out how much sodium they contain. Then others might have you reaching for more when you discover they're a good source of protein. Check out the chart below to see how they all compare.

Cracker Serving Size Calories Total Fat (g) Sodium (mg) Carbs (g) Fiber (g) Protein (g)
Barbara's Wheatines 4 squares 60 1 80 11 1 1
Pepperidge Farm's Heart Wheat 3 crackers 80 3.5 125 11 .5 1
Carr's Whole Wheat 2 crackers 80 3.5 100 10 1 1
Kashi TLC Original 7 Grain 15 crackers 120 3.5 160 21 2 3

Let's Dish: What's Your Cracker of Choice?

Snacking on Ritz Pretzel Crisps not only reminded me of my childhood fondness for classic Ritz crackers, but it also got me thinking about my favorite crackers today.

Snacking on Ritz Pretzel Crisps not only reminded me of my childhood fondness for classic Ritz crackers, but it also got me thinking about my favorite crackers today. While PartySugar and AlexisSF love Wheat Thins, I'm going to have to go with Carr's Table Water Crackers. They have a satisfyingly crisp texture and pair well with any cheese, from a creamy goat to a semifirm cheddar. Oh, and I can't ever pass up a Cheez-It.

What about you: what's your favorite cracker?

I wasn't allowed too many snacks growing up, but there was one exception: Ritz Crackers.

I wasn't allowed too many snacks growing up, but there was one exception: Ritz Crackers. For reasons unbeknownst to me, these crispy, airy pillows of goodness passed the Mom and Dad test — how, I'm still not sure. With their touch of butter, I didn't feel compelled to top them with anything else.

The classic Ritz undoubtedly remains a bestseller, but in a day and age where supermarket aisles are crammed with everything from Cheetos Mighty Zingers and New York Style Risotto Chips, Nabisco's trying to stay ahead of the curve. Enter Ritz Munchables Pretzel Thins (formerly known as Ritz Munchables Pretzel Crisps) — a product that the company describes as "pretzel outside plus cracker inside." Did they live up to their promise? Find out when you read on.

With holiday parties looming on the horizon, I've had killer apps and hors d'oeuvres in the back of my mind. Since no party is complete without a meat, cheese, and crackers platter, it's only appropriate that Nabisco has come out with a new variety of Ritz cracker, Brown Sugar Cinnamon, that's sure to be popular come Christmastime. Ritz crackers were an after-school pastime for me growing up, so I couldn't wait to try the new flavor. Did it live up to its highly-regarded name? Find out when you read more.
