Wee Are the World — Soup Kitchen Volunteering

The holiday season is in full swing so we thought it would be a fitting time to teach lil ones about giving back to the community.

The holiday season is in full swing so we thought it would be a fitting time to teach lil ones about giving back to the community. For the next few Mondays, we will offer you suggestions on how your family can help those in need. Today's focus: volunteering at a local soup kitchen.

Just about every city or town has a community center — be it a university, a church, a synagogue or a YMCA — that offers people assistance and can use the help of volunteers. Check online or in the phone book to find one in your area. Then, let them know you'd like to lend a hand. And, encourage others to volunteer by gathering a gaggle of your friends to join you.

A soup kitchen is a place where soups and foods are served free of charge to low income families and the homeless. There are many different ways to help, you can volunteer, donate money, or offer to make a batch of your favorite soup and deliver it to the kitchen. Since it's National Soup Month and I'll be discussing soups for the next several weeks, I thought this was an interesting fun fact that could motivate us all to do some act of kindness today.
