Berry Tempting: Mixed Fruit Tiramisu

I was hemming and hawing over the next great dish to feature in our Berry Tempting series when I came across a new recipe I simply couldn't resist making: a fast and easy rendition of tiramisu, topped with a pile of mixed berries.

Given how enjoyable tiramisu is on its own, I wondered if the berries were even necessary, but I quickly realized the fresh berries add a tartness and texture that makes this dessert doubly refreshing. In particular, I hoarded the blackberry bites, as their seeds add a wonderful crunch that goes swimmingly well with mascarpone cream.

Beware: This dessert is quick to make, but it'll be consumed even faster. If you don't have sambuca, try a coffee-flavored liqueur like Kahlua, or even an orange one such as Triple Sec for an equally nice flavor. Want the recipe? Then keep reading.

Berry Tempting: Cherry Pan Dowdy

Whenever I'm in New York, I try to squeeze in a trip to what I call the four B's — Bergdorf, Barneys, Bloomingdale's, and Bendel — if for nothing else, just to soak up New York fashion in all its splendor.

Whenever I'm in New York, I try to squeeze in a trip to what I call the four B's — Bergdorf, Barneys, Bloomingdale's, and Bendel — if for nothing else, just to soak up New York fashion in all its splendor. While I'm in the neighborhood, I love to stop by Serendipity3, another Upper East Side institution known for its madcap glamour, for a little refreshment. While I haven't had the restaurant's $25,000 Frrrozen Haute Chocolate, a friend did gift me the cookbook one year, and it includes some whimsical creations that I've turned to time and time again. For instance, if you flip for strawberry shortcake, you'll gravitate toward this delightful tower of whipped cream and glazed cherries, anchored by a crumbly little tea cake. There's no better way to enjoy cooked cherries. To re-create it in your kitchen, read more.

Now that we've arrived at a new month, we're ushering in a whole new set of holidays, from Father's Day to Juneteenth. There's also that all-important monthlong holiday that we should feel obligated to celebrate: National Candy Month! While we could go through the list of America's top-selling candies, I thought it'd be more fun to see if you can guess the top-selling confection in countries around the world. I'll name a country, and you guess its number one candy. Ready for a sugar high? Then let's get started.

Hard Candy: Do You Suck or Chew?

I have a friend who says there are two types of people: those who have the patience to suck on a piece of hard candy until it's gone, and those who bite into it midway through.

I have a friend who says there are two types of people: those who have the patience to suck on a piece of hard candy until it's gone, and those who bite into it midway through. (Almost as pressing as the great over/under TP debate!)

As much as I'd like to say I'm patient, I usually chomp down about halfway in. How about you?

Do You Crave Something Sweet at the End of Each Meal?

My co-worker AlexisSF has to eat something sugary at the end of every meal.

My co-worker AlexisSF has to eat something sugary at the end of every meal. To curb her sweet tooth, she often grabs an apple after lunch. I, on the other hand, am much more of a salty or sour fanatic. I'm perfectly fine ending meals on a savory note. What about you? Do you feel the urge to end your meals with a sweet treat?

Can You Break Apart These Twinkie Facts?

Happy birthday, Hostess Twinkies!

Happy birthday, Hostess Twinkies! In case you weren't aware, the cream-filled golden sponge cake celebrated its 80th anniversary this week. It may be easy to overlook the nostalgic treat in an era where seasonal ingredients outshine frozen foods and macarons are considered superior to macaroons, but after learning about the item's storied past on Food Network's Unwrapped, I realized the Twinkie is truly an American snack food icon. What interesting facts do you know about it? Find out when you tear into this quiz!

Burning Question: Is Macaron Another Spelling of Macaroon?

It's high time I set the record straight: macaron is not an alternate spelling of macaroon!

It's high time I set the record straight: macaron is not an alternate spelling of macaroon! In fact, the two terms refer to distinctly different things. Both macarons and macaroons are confections, and both names are derived from ammaccare, which is Italian for "to crush" — but that's where the similarities end.

A macaron specifically refers to a meringue-based cookie made with almond flour, egg whites, and granulated and powdered sugar, then filled with buttercream or fruit spread. The delicate treat has a crunchy exterior, and a weightless interior with a soft ending that's almost nougatlike in its chewiness. To add to the confusion, it's often called a French macaroon.

In contrast, the word macaroon is a generic phrase that is applied to a number of small, sweet confections. Mostly, the term is equated with the the moist and dense coconut macaroon, which is composed of egg whites, sugar, and dried coconut, piped with a star-shaped tip, and often dipped in chocolate. The coconut macaroon, or congolais, as it's known in France, is frequently served during Passover because it contains no flour. Which would you rather eat?

Did You Eat Candy or Sweets Yesterday?

Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate!

Happy Easter to those of you who celebrate! I tried to fill my family's Easter baskets with healthy things like fruit, trail mix, and homemade cookies to avoid sugar-overload, but it didn't matter. In the afternoon, we went to an Easter egg hunt party and were inundated with jellybeans, homemade sugar cookies in the shape of bunnies, marshmallow Peeps, pink candy corns, enormous chocolate bunnies, and Cadbury Creme eggs. I definitely enjoyed some candy and sweets. What about you?
