Drive Through Dinner: Families Eating Less Meals at Home Than Ever Before

Maybe Jamie Oliver needs to invade our homes, not our schools.

Maybe Jamie Oliver needs to invade our homes, not our schools. Between shuttling tots between activities, managing our careers, and running our households, moms are busier than ever before and it's showing in how we feed our kids.

A new study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association finds that more kids are eating foods prepared outside the home than ever before and this may be tied to the rise in tots' daily caloric intake. According to researchers, since 1994 parents have been feeding lil ones more store-prepared and fast foods than ever before, and they're not eating them in their own homes. In 1977, kids ate 23.4 percent of their calories outside their home, while in 2006 that number was closer to 34 percent.

Busy times call for meals that can be grabbed and consumed on the go. Tell the truth, how often does your family really eat a home-cooked meal at home?

Super Bowl Takeout: How to Order and Keep Your Resolutions

Super Bowl Sunday is this weekend, and I know it's supposed to be all about the game, but really, it's become all about the food.

Super Bowl Sunday is this weekend, and I know it's supposed to be all about the game, but really, it's become all about the food. Chicken wings, pizza, seven-layer dip, chips, chili, sausages, and beer. Lots of beer. It's a cruel test for those who have started a health kick on Jan 1. It's great if you can make your own healthy snacks, but if the crowd you're with is all about ordering food, here are some tips to allow you to enjoy the party, while sticking to your resolutions.

  • When ordering pizza, go for thin crust, preferably one made of whole wheat. Skip the extra cheese and go for tons of veggies. If you must have meat on your pizza, go for ham instead of pepperoni or sausage since it contains less calories. Or you can always add your own turkey or chicken sausage once the pizza arrives.
  • If ordering wings, ask for extra carrot and celery sticks and tell them to forget the ranch or blue cheese dressing.

Lil Tip: Eating Before Trick-or-Treating

Dashing out on Halloween night often leaves lil time for dinner.

Dashing out on Halloween night often leaves lil time for dinner. But filling up your children's bellies with a meal prior to trick-or-treating cuts down on the candy consumption and sour stomach. If you're looking for fast options, steer clear of the drive-thru and choose something more healthy like a vegetarian pizza on wheat crust, burritos or gyros.

Here in San Francisco, a new organization is proposing a movement to cut back on the amount of food waste. Replate.org is asking citizens of the city to leave unwanted food, leftovers, and doggy bags in plain site on top of trash cans, allowing the homeless and hungry access to the food. I think this is a great idea, as it reduces food waste and human hunger, but wonder how the homeless will be educated on the concept. What do you guys think? Should unwanted food be left for the homeless?
