Belgian City Is First to Go Meatless

Belgium's made its mark on the culinary world with waffles and chocolate. But could Ghent, Belgium, become the world's first city known for its vegetarianism? Starting today, the city has instituted a weekly "veggie day" in which government officials opt for meatless meals. When school begins again in September, schoolchildren will also have a weekly meat-free day.

Deputy mayor of Ghent Tom Balthazar explained that the reasons for going vegetarian are manifold: in addition to tackling obesity, raising awareness for vegetarianism reduces the city's environmental footprint and helps fight hunger. "Eighteen percent of the greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the meat industry . . . and the fight against hunger will go better and smoother if we eat less meat. For producing one kilogram of meat, you need seven to 10 kilograms of grains," he said.Citizens of Ghent still have the option to eat meat on "veggie day." However, as Balthazar (who is a self-described flexitarian) explains, the main menu on these days at city schools and many restaurants will be meatless, and the alternative menu will contain meat.

Although I consider myself a big meat eater, it's a relevant time to consider the social, health, and environmental impacts of consuming less meat. Would you support a vegetarian movement in your town?

PETA Wants to Make Tofu Flavored Like George Clooney

PETA is running out of viable ideas.

PETA is running out of viable ideas. In yet another absurd turn of events, the animal rights organization wants to harvest — get this — actor George Clooney's sweat to create a new flavor of tofu.

The group obtained one of the actor's sweat-laced gym towels to raise money at a fundraising auction, but then decided it might be better off using the actor's perspiration in a food product. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk penned a proposal to Clooney himself, in which she discussed the invention, to be called CloFu:

The technology actually exists to take your perspiration and make it into George Clooney-flavored tofu (CloFu) . . . we would attract many people who don't try tofu because they worry that it would be bland . . . we hope this idea meets your approval.

The star's response? "As a mammal, I'm offended," he said. I second that. I mean, I love George Clooney as much as the next gal, but the entire concept is disgusting. By George, does PETA really think that consumers are so dumbstruck by stars that they would eat something like CloFu? Are you as horrified by the letter as I am?

One of my closest friends (hi Juju!) is a vegetarian.

One of my closest friends (hi Juju!) is a vegetarian. Her hubby (hi Wes!) is not. Somehow they don't let this get to them and it all works out. However, I've known couples where this is definitely a deal breaker. So how about you? If you're a vegetarian, could you date a meat eater? And vice versa, if you're a meat eater, could you date a vegetarian? (Or meat eater and vegan, etc...)

Throughout my college years, I was a die-hard Blur fan (Damon Albarn of Gorillaz fame's other band) and I am no stranger to bassist Alex James' wacky wits. He's now living the country life in England and has recently published a story on why, after 17 years, he's "given vegetarianism the chop."

Chopping up my first lamb stayed vividly on my mind for a few days. The anatomy of a sheep is pretty similar to our own, really. I couldn't scratch my ribs without the image of that immaculate carcass springing to mind. I thought about it involuntarily as I lay in bed at night. But, boy, those chump chops were good.

I was a vegetarian for about 17 years. Now here I am, butchering and eating one of my own lambs.
