Master Martini Terminology

Dry, dirty, shaken — when it comes to tasty martinis, ordering can be a little more complicated than it should be.

Dry, dirty, shaken — when it comes to tasty martinis, ordering can be a little more complicated than it should be. Before you hit the bars to celebrate National Martini Day (it's today!), get the full scoop on everything you need to become a martini maven.

Here, we're giving you the liquor lowdown on all the different drink versions so that the next time you approach the bartender, you'll sound as seasoned as James Bond or good ol' Karen Walker from Will & Grace.

  • Gin or vodka: When you order a martini, you'll usually get a cocktail made with gin and a hint of vermouth — fortified wine flavored with a variety of herbs — in a five-to-one ratio. Expect an olive or a twist of lemon peel as garnish. Many martinis use vodka instead, but make sure to specify with the bartender if that's your preference.
  • Dry, wet, or perfect: Ordering it "dry" is asking for a martini with less vermouth than usual. A "wet" martini — you guessed it — comes with more vermouth than the standard ratio. And "perfect"? Well, that just means the drink uses equal amounts of gin and vermouth.
  • Shaken or stirred: "Shaken, not stirred" might sound familiar thanks to Mr. Bond. A shaken martini, mixed in a cocktail shaker with ice, usually produces an icier, cloudier, and slightly more diluted drink. A stirred martini chills the cocktail without diluting it quite as much from the ice.
  • Dirty: Olive lovers are sure to appreciate a "dirty" martini. This version adds olive juice for an extra briny taste.
  • Gibson: A gibson is still a martini; the only difference is that is comes garnished with a pearl onion instead of an olive or peel.
  • Vesper: For something a bit different, try a vesper: a martini composed of gin, vodka, Lillet Blanc, and a lemon twist.

Of course, martinis come in flavored versions, like cranberry, too. Now that you have the entire 411, get ready, get set, and sip away!

Toast to Spring Flowers With a Lavender Collins Cocktail

April showers may bring May flowers, but I'm an impatient lady, as I want the world to be in full bloom already.

April showers may bring May flowers, but I'm an impatient lady, as I want the world to be in full bloom already. My solution is simple: I turn to the home bar when in need of a floral fix. A swirl of lavender simple syrup and a dash of Page's Parfait Amour — a crème de violette analogue — dress up the classic Tom Collins cocktail for a sipper that transports you to sunnier days.

Wary of floral elements in food? I was too, not so long ago. The key is restraint, as the line between lovely and eau de old lady is fine. Thankfully, this cocktail is well balanced, refreshing, and could convert all but the most stalwart floral food haters. What are you waiting for? Transport yourself to a field of lavender the fast-fix way.

Strawberry Balsamic Crush: A Sweet, Tart, Savory Cocktail

We think there's no better way to celebrate Spring in full swing than with a cocktail that celebrates one of the season's greatest fruits: strawberries.

We think there's no better way to celebrate Spring in full swing than with a cocktail that celebrates one of the season's greatest fruits: strawberries. But a strawberry daiquiri this cocktail is not; this cocktail, appropriately dubbed the strawberry balsamic crush, combines sweet, tart, and savory thanks to the combination of fresh berries, aged balsamic vinegar, and freshly ground black pepper. Here, Happiest Hour hosts Matthew Rodrigues and Brandi Milloy show how the strawberry balsamic crush cocktail comes together.

Bubbly Brilliant: Sparkling Pear and Elderflower Cocktail

Has wintry weather left you with a nasty case of cabin fever?

Has wintry weather left you with a nasty case of cabin fever? This fruity and floral cocktail is the cure — at least it was for me. I recently made a trip to Tahoe with the intent to spend a few days hitting the slopes, neglecting one crucial factor: checking the weather report. The thing is, it had just snowed heavily the week before, and it had been raining all week in San Francisco (which generally shares similar weather patterns), so it was a logical assumption that the mountains would be blanketed in blissfully fresh powder.

Instead, we were faced with four days of 34°F rain, ice, and sleet. Now, it would have been easy to let this tank morale, but instead we took the high road (literally) up a winding mountain route for a blowout meal at Manzanita in the Tahoe Ritz-Carlton. As one would expect (or at least hope), the whole meal was excellent, but it was this simple yet elegant predinner cocktail that stole the show.

Bright, effervescent, and subtly spiced from the crucial addition of Hangar One Spiced Pear Vodka, it danced around my head for weeks afterward. Naturally I had to attempt to hack it at home. And while this isn't an exact replica of that tantalizing tipple, I came pretty close; I hope it will brighten your day as much as it did mine.

Notes

Ginger beer is an excellent (though less potent) substitute for the Champagne in this cocktail.

Pear and Elderflower Champagne Cocktail

Ingredients

1 1/2 ounces Hangar One Spiced Pear Vodka
1/2 ounce St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice
Brut Champagne or dry sparkling wine, chilled
Lemon twist, for garnish

Directions

  1. Combine the pear vodka, St. Germain, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until the outside of the cocktail shaker becomes frosty, then strain into a Champagne flute or coupe.
  2. Top off with Champagne and garnish with a lemon twist.

Makes one cocktail.

Party Like a Rockstar With Fergie's Low-Calorie Fall Affair Cocktail

It couldn't be more fitting that Fergie has joined forces with Voli Light vodkas.

It couldn't be more fitting that Fergie has joined forces with Voli Light vodkas. The popstar is known for her healthy ways, and Voli's line of vodkas contain one-third fewer calories than traditional spirits on the market. When I first saw the recipe for Fergie's Fall Affair, I knew I had to give it a try.

The Fall Affair does not disappoint, especially considering it's only 125 calories and contains no added sugar. It's a nice balance of sweet and tart, with a spicy kick from the cinnamon. And though it's a light vodka, the alcohol stands up in the drink. With the flavors of apple and cinnamon mingling in this cocktail, it's a recipe to have on hand during any upcoming holiday parties!

Happy Hour: Strawberry-Ginger Caipirosca

For the first time this year, I saw signs of the new season at the farmers market: purple-green Spring onions and lush, shiny strawberries.

For the first time this year, I saw signs of the new season at the farmers market: purple-green Spring onions and lush, shiny strawberries. I was so enthralled that I decided to toast the first berries with a timely cocktail.

This drink has a fruity-floral bouquet, with a clean finish from the mint and ginger. It's also not too sweet.

When I served it to my guy, he took one sip and said, "This might be the best cocktail you've ever made for me." The only downside? It has no trace of alcohol flavor, so I could have easily had five more. For the stellar recipe, read more.

Happy Hour: Amaretto-Cranberry Kiss

Any other time of year, a cocktail with "kiss" in the name might make me roll my eyes.

Any other time of year, a cocktail with "kiss" in the name might make me roll my eyes. But for Valentine's Day, this bright red, Winter-y drink is perfectly appropriate. Despite the name, I count the Amaretto-Cranberry Kiss among my favorite cocktails.

Like some of the best couples, amaretto and cranberry juice are an unlikely match, but highly compatible, and this vibrant cocktail tastes smooth, tart, and not too sweet. This time, I used sparkling cranberry juice from Trader Joe's (stirred, not shaken), which added a fun twist. Garnish with a seasonal clementine slice and toast to whatever you fancy. After-Dinner Drinks: Honey Roasted Martini

Most of us like a little something sweet after a good meal, whether it's a decadent dessert, a piece of candy, or a glass of dessert wine.

Most of us like a little something sweet after a good meal, whether it's a decadent dessert, a piece of candy, or a glass of dessert wine. I'm a sucker for creamy, sweet after-dinner drinks, like a white russian or a sip of Adult Chocolate Milk. Lately I've been getting creative with my dessert drinks, starting with this honey roasted martini.

I tore the recipe out of a Grey Goose ad a while back, though I admit I used Skyy Vanilla instead of Grey Goose, since that's what I had on hand (really, who needs two kinds of vanilla vodka in the liquor cabinet?). Though this cocktail is certainly sweet, it also packs a decadent punch reminiscent of almond truffles or nutty coffee. Blend with ice, as the recipe suggests, or just mix in a shaker as I did.
