Learn How to Cut a Pineapple

Jun 3 2008 - 9:15am Pineapple is one of my favorite fruits. However, I used to be intimidated by the spiky outside and would sometimes just buy the plastic containers full of precut pineapple. I always felt guilty, those plastic containers are a waste, and they cost a lot more than a whole pineapple would. So a few years ago, I decided to pony-up and learn how to cut one properly. It was a little awkward at first, but now it is a breeze. If you want to learn an easy way to do it, then click the "Start" button. Start Slideshow

Yum, could you please do one of these how-to's with a mango. I love them, but i find them super difficult to cut up?

Yum, how do you pick a pineapple? How do you tell if it's good or not, i never know how to choose one.

I try to get one that's heavy for its size, with firm skin (no soft spots) and bright lively leaves. Try smelling the bottom of it - if it's too sweet, generally it's already starting to ferment, but it should definitely smell pineappley. And of course, there's the old trick of getting them home, ripping off the crown of leaves, and flipping the guy upside-down to let the sugars redistribute before cutting and serving. Otherwise, the bottom sometimes tends to taste sweeter than the top.

oh, thanks for the tips- shoneyjoe! It sounds like you have been doing this for a while Smiling
I have never looked closely at a pineapple and they are somewhat intimidating- so I buy the cut up stuff.
The container waste is an important issue, and I can probably save some cash by purchasing the whole thing. thanks Smiling

I love the core too, i think it's a waste to throw it out.
    Now for the mango cutting.
-Slice the mango lengthwise next to the seed.
-Turn mango over and repeat on the other side.
-slice out the pulp by cutting between the mango pulp and the skin.
-Cut remaining pulp from the outer edge of the mango seed.
-Slice the pulp between the mango and the skin.
Cut it up in cubes and enjoy.
