As the French like to proclaim: Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé! Raise your glass, because Beaujolais Nouveau - the first wine of the harvest season in the Northern Hemisphere - has finally arrived. Yesterday was the annual release date for the wine, which is welcomed on what's called "Beaujolais Nouveau Day" with a colossal celebration across France each year.

Since the wine - which certainly isn't for snobs - makes such a splash each year, I thought I would throw out some questions and see if you can, ahem, arrive at the answers. What do you know about Beaujolais Nouveau? Let's find out.

Definition: Beaujolais Nouveau

Beaujolais Nouveau
A type of very young red wine. It's made from the best Gamay grapes from the Beaujolais region, which is located in the southern-most part of Burgundy, France. The wine is fermented for only seven to nine weeks and is officially released each year on the third Thursday of November. The smooth wine is an excellent companion to Thanksgiving dinner.

If your house is the location of a Thanksgiving potluck, you're hosting duties not only include making the turkey, but also preparing a cocktail. When guests arrive offer them a glass to get things started. Since the meal is a big one, serve an apéritif - something not too sweet that will stimulate the palate like these campari triple-sec concoctions.

On the flip side, when attending a Thanksgiving potluck, don't show up empty handed. Bring a bottle of sparkling wine or Beaujolais Nouveau or a six-pack of festive pumpkin ale.

Bitter Orange Kindler

Ingredients

2 ounces triple sec
2 ounces campari
tonic water
orange peel, optional for garnish

Directions

In a tall glass combine the triple sec and Campari with 3 cubes of ice.
Fill the glass with chilled tonic water and stir to blend. Garnish with a strip of orange peel.

Makes 1 cocktail.

Thanksgiving is a celebration that lasts half the day, so stock up on a variety of drinks for the different times. Start with a festive, champagne cocktail. Mix Prosecco with pear nectar and season with crushed black peppercorns. Let guests pour their own and have lots of bubbly on hand. Depending on your tastebuds, you could serve sparkling wine during the entire meal. Start with a light Cava and pair the turkey with a sparkling Shiraz.

For a more traditional take, reserve the bubbly for the appetizers and serve a Beaujolais Nouveau or Pinot Grigio with dinner. Think about offering multiple wines with dinner. A Chardonnay nicely pairs with the flavors of squash, while a Sauvignon Blanc complements gravy and stuffing.

Pear and Pepper Prosecco
From Tyler Florence

2 bottles (750 ml each) chilled Prosecco
2 cups chilled pear nectar
2 tablespoons coarsely crushed black peppercorns

In a large pitcher combine the prosecco and pear nectar.
Pour into glasses and sprinkle lightly with peppercorns.

Serves 12.
