Produce and Meat's COOL Move

America is moving one more step closer to awareness of where its food comes from.

The US Department of Agriculture has mandated that all produce as well as meat, fish, and poultry sold in US retail stores will be required to have country of origin labels (COOL) beginning next Tuesday, Sept. 30.

Aside from knowing more about your food's origins, the COOL new system (pun intended) could be helpful in situations such as this year's widespread salmonella outbreak. Since the outbreak was traced to Mexico, if you purchased jalapeno or serrano peppers from, say, California, you could be assured that your produce wasn't from the contaminated source.

For years, COOL has been applied to canned or boxed foods packaged overseas, but this will be the first time the rule is required for fresh foods. There are exceptions, however: meat and fish sold in small butcheries or fish markets; salad bars or packaged mixed fruit and vegetable salads; bacon, ham, and smoked salmon; frozen vegetables; domestically canned vegetables; cooked shrimp; and roasted peanuts. Canned Cranberry: Love It or Hate It?

When I was growing up, canned cranberry jelly was a part of our menu every Thanksgiving. With it's rich color, cylindrical shape, and smooth coolness, it was one of my favorite parts of the meal. I have since learned to love a more sophisticated homemade fresh cranberry sauce, but the canned cranberry holds a special place in my heart. It's ideal for making leftover sandwiches. How do you feel about it?

My girlfriend Kristen recently asked me if I could help her find a cool flask for her longtime boyfriend Chris. Man there are some crazy cool contraptions out there in this world! And I don't mean just gadgets and gizmos that geeksugar would be interested in. I'm talking about little devices that are perfect for the ultimate hostess. For example, take a look at this cupcake travel protector. Isn't it the worst when you spend a whole bunch of time decorating cupcakes only to have the frosting smeared when you pack them up? LL Cool J Helps Launch Subway's Fresh Fit Menu

You may have heard that Subway launched their new Fresh Fit menu the other day, but did you know that LL Cool J was involved? Apparently he and Jared (you know Subway Jared) were patrolling the streets of New York doing "Random Acts of Fitness." If they found you being healthy, then you would have received a $5 Subway gift card. And with that gift card you could have marched right down to your nearest Subway where you could have purchased one of their new creations.

The new menu has been designed to cater to today's increased health conscious society. The new adult combos will include low-fat 6" subs, Diet Coke/water/1% milk, and sliced apples/raisins/Baked Lays. The kid combo will be a 4" low-fat sub, 1% milk/apple juice and raisins/apples.
