In an attempt to cut costs and be more eco-chic, many college campuses have gotten rid of cafeteria trays. Instead, students are being forced to carry their meals on plates. The trayless cafeterias are seeing up to a 30 percent decrease in food waste, and with no trays to wash, the use of energy and water is reduced as well.

A few months ago we noticed that competitive eating was a rapidly growing "sport": This year, 1.5 million people tuned in to ESPN to watch the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, and there's now a game, Major League Eating, available on the Nintendo Wii. Yet while it's entertainment for many, it comes at a cost for others. Yesterday, Saurab Sabharwal, a 22-year-old engineer at Nokia-Siemens in Gurgaon, India, died during a company-sponsored pastry eating contest held in the office cafeteria.

A little while back, geeksugar lent me the DVD set of "Freaks and Geeks." I fell in love with it immediately for so many reasons, I mean talk about capturing that ridiculous high school experience. One episode in particular really stood out to me, mostly for the lunch scene.

For the first time in 10 years, celebrity chef Tyler Florence is heading back to the restaurant business. With a scheduled opening for Summer of this year, Florence's first signature restaurant will be located at the new Hotel Vertigo (currently the York Hotel) in San Francisco. Florence believes Northern California is a foodie wonderland and is excited to work on the project.

We've scoped out lunchboxes for adults and creative school lunches for kids, but if you're the type who brings your lunch from home, you've probably noticed the endless array of lunch-related gadgets available nowadays.
This week is actually National School Lunch Week, which encourages the young'uns to dine at school cafeterias. But I've found plenty of cool tools for grown-ups and kids alike that will elevate your lunch beyond the brown bag, including apple slicers and this very indulgent Crust Cutter ($3.95).
