Last week when I was opening a bottle of wine, my corkscrew broke! It was a cheap wine opener, but nonetheless, I was disappointed. Before I can enjoy another bottle of wine, I'll need a way to pop the cork. So I asked you to help me find a new wine opener.

Happy Hour: Corkscrew

My first nip of a Corkscrew elicited a "yum!" but had I examined the ingredients beforehand, I might have thought "yuck." Rum isn't really my liquor of choice, and peach liqueur plus dry vermouth just sounds like a bad combination. But in fact, the Corkscrew accomplishes just what a good cocktail should: It brings together three disparate ingredients to create an entirely new (and delicious) flavor.

The dry vermouth is an excellent counterbalance to the peach schnapps, which would otherwise be too sugary. As a result, this martini-style cocktail has a summery fruit flavor with just a hint of sweetness that will appeal even to drinkers who don't tend toward fruity drinks. To get the recipe, read more.

Ingredients

1 1/2 oz. light rum
1/2 oz. dry vermouth
1/2 oz. peach liqueur
Squeeze of lime juice

Directions
Combine all four ingredients in a cocktail shaker and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a twist of lime peel.

I am in desperate need of a new corkscrew. Every time I go to drink a bottle of wine, it's a battle to get the cork out! Sometimes I struggle with my current opener for more than ten minutes. That's why I asked you to help me look for a new, more reliable corkscrew. You searched for an opener that is efficient and attractive, one that works well on both regular and rubber corks. Every week YumSugar highlights an essential tool for the ultimate kitchen. People are always asking her what her favorite kitchen tool is and in a response to this perpetual question, she is creating a list of kitchen must-haves and special splurges (attention brides: use this as a checklist when creating your registry!). Lately I've noticed that more and more people are asking me about what the perfect hostess should have in her bar. To answer this question I thought I would put together a list of important tools, glasses, and gadgets that The Ultimate Bar (for the ultimate at home mixologist) should have.

Let's start with a tool that no bar (or kitchen for that matter) should be without: a good, reliable corkscrew. I have tried out the more expensive rabbit screw pull gadget like wine openers (test for yourself: the one pictured is $100), yet the two that I had both broke after several months of use. That's why I prefer the leverage winged, modern spiral corkscrew. It's by far the most dependable and one of the easiest to use: as the center coil is screwed into the cork, the arms rise up. When you press the arms down, the cork extracts. In some circles this twin handled affordable ($9.99) corkscrew is referred to as the Charles de Gaulle. The top of most can also be used to remove bottle caps.

Another option is the two-pronged cork fork, or butler's friend, that swiftly opens a bottle of wine without damaging the cork. It's recommended for use with older vintages of wine whose corks are more likely to crumble with the injection of a metal coil. ($18.95)

Some consider the corkscrew that waiters use, a waiter's friend, to be the most sturdy and handy corkscrew. This corkscrew relies on simple leverage to remove the cork and is light and compact. All parts fold up inside the handle, like a pocket knife making it extremely convenient and portable. When I worked in a bar I never got the hang of maneuvering this tool swiftly with one hand, however if used properly it's a great gadget complete with foil cutter, bottle rest, and battle cap opener. If you are on a budget this baby is your best bet, a fun, colorful one can be purchased under $8.00.

Monday's Leftovers: Summer Vegetable Pasta

Sundays are my shopping nights, but in a chaotic turn of events, I had a jam-packed weekend and wasn't able to squeeze it in. Thankfully, I've got everything I need for a spectacularly seasonal meal with leftover zucchini, gruyere, and basil from last night. The only other ingredients are pantry items - olive oil, corkscrew pasta, breadcrumbs, and garlic - and frozen corn works as well as fresh in a pinch. I've dodged tonight's potential dinner snafu and created a dish that tastes great fresh and hot, or served chilled the next day.

Well, it's time to quit waiting and start drinking.
