Jan 9 2009 - 1:00pm When it comes to home cooking, celebrities are just like us. Last night, on The Late Show With David Letterman, Kate Winslet admitted she loves to cook but can be a little accident-prone in the kitchen.
On the upside, the Revolutionary Road actress admits she loves to eat and cook.
i saw this interview last night and was in shock! i love her but go figure that she's just not the best in the kitchen! i can't say that i've had any major catastrophes in the kitchen, but
murphy's law means that i've just jinxed myself.
During the summer months, I usually find myself craving a hotdog or two. Prefering a crispy skin, I usually pop them under the broiler. This particular time, a bit of grease popped up and hit
the heating element. So, yeah, starting the oven on fire and having to call the fire department to make sure that I had indeed extinqished my flaming weenie has to be right up there for me!
I have cut my self with the knife a few times just missing a finger and chopping off the nail. And something I for get the pot holder when I grab a hot pot.
I will say I was burned by hot oil accidentally thrown by a friend in one arm and by another friend's cigarette on the other hand.Wrong place at the wrong time.
I burned the heck out of my arm on the bottom of a pot once. I was making rice krispie treats and for some reason when I was tipping the pot over to dump out the mixture, I nudged the bottom
of the pot with the inside of my forearm, not realizing how hot it was! I have a large oval scar as a reminder. I also sliced a horizontal cut into the tip of middle finger with a knife once.
I've gotten much better, but I'll get an occasional burn here or there.
I'm nursing a pretty bad burn right now, I got it by accidentally touching the inside of the oven with my forearm as I was taking a casserole dish out of the oven. I also burned my finger
making that meal! I'm a bit accident prone in the kitchen...
There was a great thread about kitchen accidents on Serious Eats yesterday. I laughed so hard I choked on my gum.
I've burned water, forgotten I put eggs on to hard boil only to have them explode, I've had pyrex dishes explode after I've removed them from the oven. And while at my sister's house recently
I burned myself removing one of those huge stupid Stoffer's Lasagna's from the oven. The darn tin tray twisted and the bubbling hot pasta sauce pour onto my wrist. I screamed and the tray
continued to fall to the floor.
My sister was like "burned by the sauce". Yup, but the funniest thing was the entire lasagna was on the floor, still bubbly hot and both of my nephews got up took a spatula and scrapped the
floor lasagna back into the tray, then they got plates and dished out the floor lasagna and eat it. They said the Stoffer's taste like crap anyway so floor grit might make it taste better.
And strangely they claimed it tasted better after it had been on the floor.
i've had a few minor burns but nothing that's ever left a mark. stupidest thing i've ever done is line cookie sheets with wax paper and not parchment paper and then filling my apt. with
smoke. luckily we had disabled our fire alarms anyway so they didn't go off lmao. i also managed to set the wooden handle of my mom's super old frying pan on fire once. i'm still pretty
impressed that i managed to do that one lol.
I haven't ever done anything majorly bad in the kitchen, but I did manage to slice my thumbtip off when I was dissecting a baby pig in high school. I've had a couple of Pyrex casserole dishes
explode when I've put them in the sink after they had just been in the oven, which always bums me out. I did have one teeny tiny fire once...I was heating some oil in a pan to sautee some
onions. Well, let's just say it got WAY too hot and when I put the onions in, they almost instantly started to burn and smoke and one of them jumped out of the pan and landed on the burner
and started a little fire.
I watched this interview and I was glad to hear celebrities are as clumsy as I am. Over the summer I burned myself on a pan I was taking out of the oven after it had been baking for twenty
minutes on 450 degrees, which then got infected...six months later I have a nasty scar. I also once cut off a chunk of my finger while cutting a bagel which required stitches.
My worst kitchen injury was a few years ago now but thankfully not while I was cooking. We were replacing the microwave (which was suspended under the cabinets by an apparently very sharp
metal bracket) and after we took it down I fell and my hand hit the bracket...I sliced through my hand and cut an artery open in the process, and it was a nice trip to the ER...
My mum once set the grill on fire by putting too many sausages on there and forgetting about them.
She also explodes eggs and beef hearts in the microwave. I have a bad habit of letting milk and porridge erupt in the microwave.
I've sliced my fingers with bread knives a lot, burned the palm of my left hand checking a stove element, burned my forearms on the sandwich toaster. Scalded my wrists by over filling hot
water bottles and missing teacups. Got chilli in my eyes making sauce, grease burns up my arms. I also burned my stomach by spilling a piping hot coffee down me, coffee straight from the
percolator.
I also exploded a pyrex dish lid by putting it into the empty sink to cool. I set it down and POP!

1My arm has scars like hers. Two really bad ones. I always manage to touch the top of the oven when I am taking out pizza or cookies.
2Nothing too major. Mostly burns and a some cuts here and there.

Floorsagna!
13I think I get a cut weekly. Peeling vegetables, chopping, etc. I have a scar on my right hand from peeling off a part of my palm.

Needless to say, I was able to relate to Kate.
