If it hasn't become apparent over the last few days, I'm an enthusiastic fan of Ming Tsai's. Last week, the Simply Ming chef stopped into San Francisco to host a party for the Macy's Come Together campaign. While demonstrating how to make potstickers, Ming, an exceptional storyteller, made fun of his parents who were present in the audience, told tales of mischief in France's Michelin-starred restaurants, and recalled his win against Bobby Flay on Iron Chef America ("rumor has it that I may soon face off against Iron Chef Morimoto," he told the crowd).

No one was eliminated on this week's episode of Hell's Kitchen. Instead, Vanessa decided to leave the competition. The pressure of successfully performing with only one hand — the other was severely burnt — was too difficult so she asked Ramsay for permission to leave the show.

The other day, while waiting for a delayed flight, I was clicking around the Internet and came across this article about ice selling like hot cakes. It seems that there's a small percentage of the population who just love, love, love chomping down on ice. In fact, it's so popular in places — particularly the South — that chains like Sonic Drive-In are actually selling 10 pound bags for $1.49.

On today's date, June 28, in 1988 the Spanish toxic olive oil trail ended after 15 months of investigation. In what is known as one of the worst records of food poisoning in history, an epidemic broke out in May of 1981. Hundreds of Spaniards fell severely ill with pneumonia like symptoms that doctors were unable to treat correctly.

Okay, since we're sort of on the topic of beers, I thought this story would be interesting to share. A new study by Leonard Lee (of Columbia University) had 388 people taste-test two different beers: one regular and one doctored with a few drops of balsamic vinegar. The participants were then divided into three different groups:
Those who knew nothing about the balsamic
Those who were told about the balsamic ahead of time
Those who were told about the balsamic, but after they drank it and before they voted
To see the surprising results of the taste test, read more

The third episode of Hell's Kitchen aired last night and, unlike many of the contestants, I was prepared - Grey Goose martini in hand, computer by my side - and ready for whatever challenges Gordon Ramsay proposed. Not only did the chefs-in-training have to cook their usual dinner service, but they also had to wake up at 5am to prepare breakfast for members of the United States military. To see what went down - or as the booming, Robin Leach-ish commentator would say - what went up in flames this week, (including the dismissal of 2 rightfully deserving contestants and my list of top 5 Ramsayisms) simply read more

Apparently Molly swallows her gum every time she chews it. According to her fiance (who's a doctor) and FitSugar (who says only sugar free is hard to digest) it's a myth that chewing gum will last undigested in your stomach for seven years. I still never swallow my gum and always have a small piece of paper on hand to spit it out in.
