Could You Eat an All McDonald's Diet?
Jun 20 2008 - 11:45am In what could be the strangest morsel of food news this week, a Virginia man named Chris Coleson has lost 86 pounds since December by eating nothing but McDonald's. Aspiring to be the Mickey D's equivalent of Subway's Jared, Coleson ate a "diet" consisting of McDonald's "salads, wraps, apple-walnut salads, and the occasional cheeseburger." McDonald's isn't planning to sign Coleson as a spokeperson (oddly, the company has Heidi Klum endorsing its wraps in Germany).

No way - there's nothing at McD that's that good - maybe a chicken salad but that is way high in calories and once again - not that good.

Good for him if he managed to lose weight, but why would I depend on a place like McDonald's for that? And weight loss from something doesn't always equal being healthy.

that sounds disgusting! i agree with TidalWave...it's not really rocket science to lose weight (not that its easy)-- it's all about calories in vs calories out. but i can't imagine what all that over-processed food did to his health.

how horrible must ones eating habits be to actually LOSE weight from mcdonalds? imagine how bad this person ate if mcdonalds was healthier in comparison? thats the only way this would be possible, unless maybe they worked out like it was their job since starting this "diet".

I do think that there is a good point to this story. That you can make better decisions when you eat out. This guys diet is extreme, but there is a McD's by my office, and I always hear people in the elevator saying, I never eat fast food, but since everyone was going I got xxx super fattening burger and fries.

Fork no! Not a huge fan of Mac and Don's, and I couldn't stand the repetition of the same few things over and over again. After several months of salads, he won't be able to look at one for quite a while, and will most likely fall back into his old eating habits. A person can have so much more variety, better tasting food, and save money by simply cooking at home. And working out. It's not rocket science! Smiling

I'd rather starve than eat an all McDonald's diet. The only time I end up there is on a road trip, and I'm always challenged as to what to eat. In my humble opinion, everything on their menu smells and tastes the same. It's whatever they cook everything in. Blech!

Surprisingly enough, McDonalds has really cleaned up their menu and modified it as to make it healthier (in a sense that its healthier than other fast food, not particularly healthy FOR you). Their portions of food are also pretty accurate so its easier to order a menu item and not over eat. I believe that this person lost weight by eating well portioned and semi-balanced meals at McDonalds because in all reality if you do that with ANY meals whether its at mcdonalds or at home you would get the same results. I think this just goes to show that if you eat the RIGHT way you can eat anything you want.

He was consuming some crazy amount of calories (I think I read in one article close to 5,000 calories a day?). He went on what nutritionists call a Starvation Diet and cut back to 1,200-1,400 calories a day... not recommended for a man of his size even now that he is down 86 pounds. But, if you look at his healthy choices, they aren't that different from what my friends who diet eat: salads, wraps, occasionally a cheeseburger? Would you go on that diet at any other restaurant- even a healthy-labeled restaurant? Probably, so what's the difference that he did it at McDonald's?

    Never, for three reasons.
    1. I'd feel like I was lying to people by telling them McDonald's was healthy and a great way to lose weight.
    2. How expensive must that have been?
    3. I bet his cholesterol is through the roof eating their deep fried chicken with ranch dressing on a flour tortilla every day. There's no way that starving yourself and only eating processed everything is good for you.

For those who are not reading the article, this is important:
He said he's healthier by the numbers, too. Dietitians have warned him that he's likely lost muscle mass and needs more variety in his diet. But Mr. Coleson's cholesterol, which has not been below 250 since 1993, is down to 239 today from 277 in December.

Which means that his cholesterol is not through the roof!

Also, I am sure that eating two meals at subway every day for a year was waaaaaaay more expensive than doing the same at McDonalds.
