Meet 901, Justin Timberlake's New Tequila

He's already a pop singer, fashion designer, and restaurant owner, but Justin Timberlake's latest job title? Spirits maker. Yesterday the young entrepreneur announced the launch of his new line of tequila, 901. The brand has been in development for over two years and plans to hit liquor store shelves in May.

A spokesperson for Timberlake explains that "901 is that time of night when your evening is ending, but your night is just beginning." The number also happens to be the area code for Memphis, TN, Timberlake's hometown. With more and more celebrities getting into the food industry, 901 isn't a surprise to me, and I look forward to tasting the tequila when it arrives.

Make Pecan Pie Like Grandma Timberlake

Pop singer Justin Timberlake recently opened his first restaurant in New York City. Called Southern Hospitality, it's a BBQ joint that serves exactly what you would expect from a Southern boy at heart: ribs, cornbread, hush puppies, and fried chicken. Many of the recipes are from his family's collection, including his grandmother's deviled eggs and pecan pie. Says Timberlake of his beloved deviled eggs:

It's my granny's original recipe that I grew up eating and she finally showed me how to make them.

That's not the only recipe his granny is sharing, because we have her scrumptious pecan pie. With a sweet, syrupy filling and crunchy, melt in your mouth pecans, this is one recipe that you will definitely want to make. Justin Timberlake's Pecan Pie

3 eggs, beaten
3/4 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup corn syrup (light or dark)
1 cup coarsely chopped pecans
1 pie shell, baked and cooled

Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Combine the sugar, flour, salt, eggs, and butter in a bowl. Whisk ingredients until light in color.
Add corn syrup, vanilla, and chopped pecans. Stir with a rubber spatula until combined.
Pour into a baked and cooled pie crust and bake in oven for 30 minutes.
Cool, slice and serve.

Serves 10-12.

Will Ferrell Makes People Think of Peeps?!?

I read the weirdest press release last week. The folks over at Just Born (the folks responsible for Peeps, the Easter marshmallow tradition) announced the results to their annual Peeps Celebrity Survey. With a name like that, I assumed they surveyed celebrities, but no, that's not true at all. It's a survey about Peeps in relation to celebrities. For example, 22% of the people surveyed feel that Will Ferrell is the male person most resembling a Peep in "physique, colorful attire, or sweet nature/personality." Okay, so the first few don't have much to do with "celebrity" and according to the press release, the survey is actually done as "an important way to keep up with today's trends and cultures."

59% of the people surveyed think the chick is cooler than the bunny - personally I like the bunny. I munch the ears off first, which is even weirder to me because I don't even like the way they taste.
More people enjoy the Peeps fresh (as opposed to "aged").
When asked how people enjoyed their Peeps. The top three answers were: head first, in crafts/decor and micro-waved. Hrmm... micro-waved, really? I might have to try that (again, not sure why I need to, just feel compelled to).

After Will Ferrell, people felt that Johnny Depp, Jamie Foxx and Justin Timberlake all resembled a Peep.
When asked what "female public person or celebrity might Peeps become," the answers were Jessica Simpson, Oprah and Ellen DeGeneres.
The male person most in need of a Peep is President Bush (2nd year in a row), followed by Donald Trump and Simon Cowell. Something tells me that Simon might just bite the head off and spit it out...
The female person most in need of a Peep is dear ol' Britney (at 40%).

Now what I want to know is how many people actually took this survey and what was the age range.

Come Party With Me: Chinese New Year Celebration

Chinese New Year's Eve is tomorrow and it wouldn't be right if I didn't devote a little party planning to ring in the lunar calendar's first day of the year! Luckily Chinese New Year celebrations last for 15 whole days, so if you don't have time to throw an impromptu last minute party this weekend you can host one next week or weekend. Invite all of your friends to watch the local Chinese New Year parade (the one here in SF is March 3) and then head over to your house for a little fiesta afterwards. Invites: Simplicity is chicness (and elegance) and make these invites simple but beautiful. On red paper hand write a message with gold ink along these lines

PartySugar Invites You To Welcome The Year Of The Pig With A Chinese New Year Celebration Dinner

If you have a pig stencil you could cut out the shape of a pig in gold foil and place it above the welcome note. On the back write the details of the event: when and where, what time and what type of dress, etc. Send the invites in pretty little red envelopes in honor of the Chinese tradition of giving money stuffed into red envelopes as New Year gifts.

Menu: The Chinese eat fish and dumplings on New Year to convey a sense of togetherness, abundance, and family. Start with YumSugar's pork and cabbage potstickers. For the main event offer Chinese style steamed fish with rice and noodles. If you're lucky enough to live near a Chinese store, you can purchase a Chinese New Year cake (or other pastries), or else you can take a stab at making Yum's westernized version: Chinese New Year Inspired cake, or else serve your favorite cake or pie from your local bakery. Buy a bunch of fortune cookies and have guests take turns reading their fortunes aloud. Sliced oranges are another customary after dinner treat. Drinks: Shake up Chinese Cocktails for you and your guests. During dinner, a Riesling will gracefully complement the richness and spice of the Chinese food. For those who are driving mix a ginger and tonic mocktail. Don't forget to have lots of sparkling and still water on hand as well.

The Look: Red, gold, and pigs should be the underlying theme in your decorating scheme. Dress your table with a beautiful red tablecloth, gold napkins, and gold candles. Use fresh cut branches of orange or tangerine trees to create a centerpiece. Leafy orange trees symbolize the branching out of the family and good luck. Hang paper Chinese lanterns with tassels from you chandelier. Place red tulips or yellow chrysanthemums in low vases - don't use white flowers because they are affiliated with funerals in the Chinese culture. Add eye catching glinting gold details in the form of piggy banks, floating tea lights, and shiny coins.

Music: Create a playlist with music from you favorite Chinese themed movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or In The Mood For Love. During dinner play Xiao Peng Jiang's Collection of Chinese Fesitival Music. For after dinner play big-time Taiwanese popstar (Yum calls him the Asian Justin Timberlake!) Jay Chou's Common Jasmine Orange (available on iTunes).

Come Party With Me: Mardi Gras Bash - Music

There is less then 36 hours to go until my Mardi Gras party and I believe I have everything basically under control. The invitations were sent and the RSVP texts have been vibrating on my phone all morning (why does everyone wait until the last minute to rsvp???), my house is already set into party mode, the keg will be picked up in the morning, and later today I'll start making sweet and savory appetizers. I hope that everyone comes in the mood to dance and that is why the music is a very important part of this party. The music at an event should never be overlooked (sometimes I get so caught up in the cooking I forget until the last minute!) and if you are not a super DJ, ask a trusted, musically inclined friend to help you. I took my own advice and talked to the Sugar Network's in the know resident DJ, BuzzSugar. She recommended I put at least one New Orleans/Mardi Gras inspired mix on the list and pointed me to a compilation called Louisiana Gumbo. There's also an interesting sounding CD on iTunes called Mardi Gras Party. I'll also add all of the songs from BuzzSugar's Mardi gras playlist to my mix for the night. It may be a long night so I'll need a great variety of songs.
