KFC's Buckets For The Cure: Cool or Not?

Hmm . . . I'm torn over this one. Fast food retailer KFC launched a new initiative to support breast cancer research. Called Buckets For The Cure (seriously), for each pink bucket of chicken sold, KFC will donate 50 cents to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. KFC is aiming for a final donation amount of $8 million, which, if reached, will be the largest single donation to date. And that's a lot of buckets!

While I'm quick to consider any donation to breast cancer research a good donation, this partnership confuses me. On a very basic level, fried chicken is not the healthiest menu choice and can lead to obesity. And many doctors agree that obesity puts a woman at higher risk for developing breast cancer, since many breast cancers are fueled by estrogen, a hormone produced by fat tissue.

However strange it seems, the effort is laudable. The Buckets For The Cure website features accounts of survivors and victims of the disease as well as information and other resources. And I assume you can fill your pink bucket with grilled chicken instead of fried for a healthier option. What do you think?

Would You Try the KFC Double Down?

Last August, in a This Is Why You're Fat kind of moment, KFC began testing the Double Down in select markets, a sandwich that contains two pieces of bacon, melted slices of Swiss and pepper jack cheese, and "the Colonel's sauce" stuffed between two slices of fried chicken. It seems almost too crazy to be true, but KFC has announced it will be rolling out the behemoth nationwide on April 12. I'm not going to lie - I'm kind of curious to try it, but at 540 calories, 32 grams of fat, and 1,380 milligrams of sodium, it definitely won't be a regular part of my life. How do you feel about the sandwich going mainstream?

KFC Lights Up Markets With Branded Fire Hydrants

Looks like KFC isn't ready to give up its moment in the spotlight just yet. It's switching its marketing game plan and replacing pitches on potholes with flyers on fire hydrants.

To get the word out about the new Fiery Grilled Wings, KFC is giving two cities in Indiana, Brazil and Indianapolis, $7,500 so local officials can improve their cities' fire safety - and emblaze Colonel Sanders's face onto their hydrants and fire extinguishers. In return for the advertisements, the fast food company will help the two cities pay for new extinguishers and hydrants.

Since I don't know all the details, I'm rather ambivalent about the arrangement. For instance: Is the signage permanent? Does it help the city's taxpayers? I suppose it's no different from selling space on public transit, but I'm awed by the way companies continue to find new places to stick their logos. How do you feel about it?
