The stores are currently loaded with pink products benefiting breast cancer research. For example, KitchenAid carries a huge line of pink products that generate funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. What I want to know is, do you purchase these pink products?

Host Your Own Party for the Cure

This October, the folks at KitchenAid are proposing that you host a Cook for the Cure Party. By hosting a party you can help raise funds that benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and have a fabulous time doing it.

They've got the party planning down to four easy steps:

Download the party kit, which includes invitations, party suggestions, recipes and entertaining tips.
Plan the party. You'll have all the tools you need to determine what you need for a brunch party, a dessert party, a dinner party, etc. Be sure to ask your guests to bring a donation in lieu of a hostess gift.
Fill out the donation form and gather up the donations from your guests. Mail them to the address provided.
The most important step: Have a great time!

The KitchenAid Mixer contest began and ended and as much as I would have loved to present each one of you with a prize, there can only be one winner. We were overwhelmed with entries, and set the geeks off to magically compute a random winner. So who was it? Well folks, give a big round of applause to jerseyjen. She'll now be able to easily whip up meringues, cakes, breads and more. I hope she sends us pics of her creations too!

The Ultimate Kitchen: Mixer

This week's ultimate kitchen item is a great mixer. I know, it's a bit of a splurge, and not everyone is going to use it. However, if you bake a lot (or plan on becoming a better baker), then you might really want to consider one. And, if you're building a registry, it's a great item for people to chip-in and get for you, so go for it!

My personal favorite (the one I have and love love love) is a KitchenAid Pro 600. It's a little pricey (list price: $500, but most places sell it for less than $400), but it will do everything you want it to and more. It comes with a flat beater, a wire whip, dough hook and a clear plastic pouring shield. You also have the option of purchasing other attachments such as a meat grinder, pasta maker or ice-cream machine. If the Pro is too pricey, KitchenAid also has an Artisan model that has a bit less power and capacity.

Growing up, my mom had a trusty goldenrod colored Sunbeam mixer. In fact, she still has it now. Assuming that Sunbeam's quality standards haven't declined in the last 25 years, then I'd have to say that for $99.99, this shiny red Sunbeam Stand Mixer is quite the bargain. It's available in other colors as well.

Another great mixer splurge is the DeLonghi Stand Mixer. Made from brushed aluminum, it can hold up to 7 quarts, has 6 power speeds and comes with a 10 year warranty. It's similar to the KitchenAid in that you can purchase many attachments and accessories and it comes with a high-ticket price. $440, is not an easy price to swallow, however these things are built to last.

Finally, if you don't have room for a full stand mixer, or can't see yourself using it often enough to justify the purchase, then be sure to get a small hand mixer. This small appliance can be stored in the cupboard and will really help out for things like beating eggs or whipping cream. Hamilton Beach has a 6 Speed Mixer that retails for about $30, but is on sale for $16.97. It also comes with a handy storage case.

Scoop Your Own Olive Oil and Pine Nut Ice Cream

On the hot days of Summer, there is nothing like a scoop of ice cream to cool down. While I've enjoyed my fair share of store-bought ice cream, it was finally time to start making my own, so I recently purchased the ice cream attachment for my Kitchenaid. I was nervous about making ice cream (the custard can quickly curdle) and unfortunately, my nerves got the best of me: when I turned up the heat too high my first batch curdled at the very end of cooking!While I was disappointed with my first go, I had to give it another shot and I am glad I did. With a little more patience, I kept the heat lower and the second custard batch was a complete success. Intrigued by David Lebovitz's interesting ice cream combinations in Fine Cooking, I decided to make his unique roasted pine nut and fruity olive oil ice cream. The flavor definitely caught my guests off guard, but once they took a bite, they loved it! The pairing of olive oil and pine nuts is actually reminiscent of the more traditional butter pecan.
