Happy Hour: Lime Rickey

This weekend my dad was helping me make a lime tart for Easter dinner's dessert. We were working in my brother's kitchen, which is beautifully remodeled, yet lacking in the essential kitchen tools. The lime tart was my best option because it required no hand mixer or food processor. I bought a whole bunch of limes and my dad agreed to juice them with his hands and a fork. He cut all 15 limes and we only needed juice from about half of that. What did I do with all of the extra lime juice? Why I made a cocktail of course! A lime rickey is a refreshing cocktail that's like an adult version of limeade. Gin (or vodka, if you prefer) is stirred into a mixture of sugar simple syrup, lime juice, and soda water. Garnish with the extra limes and enjoy. To check out this must-make-the-next-time-you-have-too-much-fresh- squeezed-lime-juice recipe, read more

1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups gin
3/4 cup fresh lime juice
1 1/2 quarts chilled soda water
Thin slices of lime

In a 1-quart pan, mix sugar with 1/2 cup water and stir over low heat until sugar is dissolved, about 5 minutes. Let cool or chill.

In a 3-quart pitcher, combine gin, lime juice, and the cooled syrup. Cover and freeze until ready to serve.

To serve, add soda water. Pour into ice-filled glasses and garnish with lime.

Happy Hour: Jade Cocktail

Last week's candy corn cordial and slime rickey were such a playful way to get in the spirit of Halloween that I couldn't wait to continue on with the fun.

This drink's day-glo-green hue hints at just the right amount of macabre without being too kitschy. It's also a last relic of the now-defunct Jade Bar, formerly one of my favorite haunts in San Francisco.

With a punchy melon flavor that resembles a lime Skittle, it'd be a great adult substitute for trick or treating. Interested in this ghoulish gulp? Then keep reading for the recipe.

Happy Hour: Slime Rickey

After tossing back a few of PartySugar's Candy Corn Cordials last weekend, I was ready to get into the spirit of the holiday with a chilling concoction of my own. A slime rickey isn't just a wordy play on the classic lime rickey of gin, lime juice, and club soda - it's also softened with the sweetness of simple syrup and eerily bobbing frozen grapes. The beverage is so easy to drink that the pitcher I made was gone in under an hour! Looking for a playful and festive Halloween refreshment?
Yum Market Finds: Cocktail Time

You know I am a fan of specialty cocktails served in specialty glasses. Like the right outfit for a certain occasion, the right glass is necessary for a certain drink. Not just for aesthetic appeal, but because the drink actually tastes different, better. With that said, I ran across some pretty cool cocktail glasses recently in the Yum Market on TeamSugar. Take this beautiful blue champagne glass for example. I take one look at it and I instantly crave a bellini or mimosa. I wonder if atkoester thought the same thing when she found this flute?

Two more distinctive glasses so read more

Rubialala saved this golden goblet that would be ideal for a tall glass of beer or a refreshing mixed drink that includes ice like a lime rickey or pomtea spritzer.

I love these stemless martini glasses so much that I'm thinking about ordering a set! They set an immediate cool and tranquil mood and can make any martini from the manhattan to a limelight seem sophisticated and appetizing. Great find almost famous!

Please keep on sharing your kitchen-y bookmarks in the Yum Market!
