Fall is flying by and it's time to start prepping for the most food-centric holiday of the year, Thanksgiving. Turkey day requires special ingredients, cooking equipment, and entertaining supplies, so we've rounded up some important items that will help you out during November. Although we are almost at the end of December, I highly recommend you wannabe mixologists make a cocktail entitled November. Created by Scott Baird, a dear friend, owner of 15 Romolo, and one of San Francisco's foremost bartenders, this concoction won the Nirvino Navan cocktail competition at Swig.

If you've never tried Navan, a natural vanilla liqueur, get your hands on a bottle stat! It's a great mixing liquor that can be used in both sweet and savory applications. This well-balanced, delicious cocktail balances out the Navan with a smoky scotch, while apple juice adds freshness.

From Scott Baird of 15 Romolo

Ingredients

3⁄4 oz. Navan Natural Vanilla Liqueur
1⁄2 oz. Benedictine
1 1⁄4 oz. cognac
1⁄2 oz. fresh lemon juice
1 oz. unsweetened apple juice
1/8 oz. Scotch (recommended: Laphroaig)
Dash of Fee Bitters
Dash of cinnamon tincture
1 1⁄2 oz. dry apple cider
Lemon Twist

Directions

Combine Navan, Benedictine, cognac, lemon juice, apple juice, scotch, bitters, tincture, and ice in a cocktail shaker.
Shake for 10 seconds and strain into a Collins glass.
Add apple cider and fill to the top with ice.
Finish it off with a twist of lemon.

Makes 1 drink.

Happy Hour: Cranberry Margarita

While I'm a fan of the classic margarita, during November, I like to enjoy its Thanksgiving-themed cousin, the cranberry margarita. It's surprising how much the addition of cranberry juice changes the flavor of the tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice cocktail. It's festive and familiar, but potent with a rich autumnal hue. Instead of craving tortilla chips and guacamole, I found myself wanting something elegant and savory. Thus, I paired the cran marg with a warm crab dip. Cranberry Margarita
From Bobby Flay

Ingredients

2 cups tequila
1 1/3 cups cranberry juice
1 cup orange-flavored liqueur (triple sec of Cointreau)
2/3 cup fresh-squeezed lime juice

Directions

Combine the tequila, cranberry juice, orange liqueur, and lime juice in a large pitcher. Shake over ice.
Strain into margarita glasses or low cocktail flutes. Alternately, strain into low tumblers filled with ice.

Serves 10.

I'm an avid and advanced home cook. I'm passionate about food. I entertain at least twice a month. I even find the act of chopping wildly relaxing. Now that you know these things about me, you won't be surprised to learn that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday! I love everything about Thanksgiving from the planning to the turkey to the tablescape. While I'd like to think my enthusiasm for the third Thursday in November is contagious, there are some people who simply don't enjoy Thanksgiving. How do you feel about it?
