A few weeks ago, Yum and I were discussing peanut allergies. The allergy - which leaves many unable to consume the childhood staple of peanut butter & jelly sandwiches - affects thousands of schools, children, and families . Even the smallest amount of peanut oil can cause severe reactions.

Everyone from health experts to Rachael Ray has touted the benefits of olive oil. As demand for expensive, higher-quality olive oil has grown, however, so has the problem of fraud. Last year, Connecticut officials discovered that some of that state's olive oil was a little too slick.

A recent study conducted by two New York City high-school students shows that fish is commonly misnamed. When 60 fish samples from four sushi restaurants and 10 supermarkets were inspected using a genetic fingerprinting technique, a quarter turned out to be mislabeled.
Some findings: "White tuna" was really Mozambique tilapia, a much cheaper, commercially farmed fish.

Whenever my mom went grocery shopping, she would treat me to a box of Barnum's Animal Crackers. Even though they were called crackers, I considered them more of a cookie and would save them to enjoy after lunch, or as a reward for making it through a long day of school. They're great plain, but in a few steps, you can also have a delicious after school snack.

The discussion about whether or not soy sauce is actually soy sauce made me wonder about food labels in general and whether or not people actually read them. I'm fortunate enough not to have any major food allergies and have stupidly stopped counting calories years ago, so I rarely look at the actual labels (although I try not to buy too many processed food items, so in theory I wouldn't have that many labels to read). How about you?

On today's date in 1965, the characters of the popular cartoon comic strip, Peanuts, were on the cover of Time magazine. Peanuts was arguably the most popular of comic strips, and created solely by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz.
