After sampling the tasty treats around Oahu, I had to stop by a farmers market to witness the local food revolution firsthand. Luckily, Kapiolani Community College hosts a weekly market on Saturdays. While the vendors sell everything from tomatoes to abalone, the deliciousness of fresh local pineapple is hard to beat.

I'm taking a Chinese class right now, and one of the phrases that came up in a book was "xiangjiao pingguo" (translation: banana apple). Whenever anyone says the phrase - which has become the class's go-to noun - we all wonder, what on earth is a banana apple? Well, today we found out.

My sister is on the cover of a fabulous new book called Change the World For Ten Bucks. The idea behind the book — which is written by an organization called We Are What We Do — is small actions multiplied by lots of people equals big change. Basically if everyone stops using plastic bags and recycles more, the world will be a better place!

Because I had a coupon to try Jamba Juice's new oatmeal for a buck, and because Monday in San Francisco started with a serious chill, I decided to mix up my usual cold cereal routine and try this warm treat for a change.
Jamba has been advertising this organic oatmeal generously in its storefronts, and the photos of creamy oats topped with fruit enticed me. You can choose from apple-cinnamon, blueberry-blackberry, or banana, all enhanced with "brown sugar crumble."

Despite the fact that it's Winter, don't limit your fruit intake to oranges, bananas, and apples. Next time you're at the market, pick up a few persimmons. The sweet, mild-flavored fruits, which originate from Asia, are in season between November and February.

Every couple of weeks we get a big batch of fresh fruit (apples, pears, bananas, tangerines) delivered to the office. People seem to go to town on the pears, tangerines and bananas, but the sad apples seem to accumulate. Last night I noticed that they weren't looking so great and decided that no one was going to eat them in that state.

At a recent restaurant outing, a friend and I ordered an appetizer that was an unusual (but not unheard of) combination of flavors: gruyère cheese and Fuji apples.
The combination of melted cheese and apples has always been a favorite of mine, and it made me ponder the other unusual pairings that I've loved in my lifetime. As a 5-year-old, I wrapped Kraft singles around my bananas.

Last month was National Cookie Month and, in case you didn't know, we featured a different cookie recipe each day. If you missed any of them, then you're in luck, we've compiled them all for you right here. There were some basics like snickerdoodles and shortbread, but there were also some new finds like potato chip cookies.

Last week YumSugar asked what kind of pie you preferred. While the majority opted for the classic apple or holiday pumpkin, there were quite a few, myself included, who declared banana cream pie as their fave. With its delicious vanilla custard and peaks of billowing whipped cream, BCP is a dessert that can be enjoyed any time of year.
