Italy's Fashion Houses Pay Tribute to Coca-Cola

Milan's 2010 Spring Fashion Week just came to a close, and in addition to revealing their latest collections, Italy's premiere fashion houses also partnered with Coca-Cola to raise funds for earthquake victims in Abruzzo, Italy.

Female designers Donatella Versace, Alberta Ferretti, Angela Missoni, Anna Molinari for Blumarine, Veronica Etro, Silvia Venturini for Fendi, Consuelo Castiglioni for Marni, and Rossella Jardini for Moschino dressed up Coca-Cola Light's trademark clear bottle for sale at an auction during Milan's "Tribute to Fashion" show.

I like them all, but my hands-down favorite is the iconic woven Missoni design, followed closely by the Moschino milk parody and Blumarine's flirty fruit pattern. To see each bottle, read more.

Sydney Promotes International Food Festival With Food Flags

The brand-new Sydney International Food Festival has garnered worldwide attention with an appetizing marketing campaign that showcases flags made out of food. The designs, created by Sydney advertising agency WHYBIN/ TBWA, pay homage to symbols of state by composing them out of various countries' most representative ingredients.

You Are What You Eat: A Study in Consumption

This month, Good magazine features a collection of narrative images that explores the different ways people address food. "You Are What You Eat," a collection of narrative images by artist Mark Menjivar, divulges the contents of various eaters' refrigerators.

One fridge, stacked haphazardly with various styrofoam takeout containers, reflects the night owl habits of a bartender. Another icebox, stocked mostly with beer, coffee drinks, and a lone plate of leftovers, reflects the eating habits of three college students. Even sadder, another contains nothing but mayonnaise and a black plastic bag - it's the fridge of a street advertiser who makes $432 a month in wages.Menjivar's work reminds us that the food we stock in our refrigerators is as much a footprint of our lives as what we do or how we dress. If I were to publish my own, I would submit the above photo, with the header, "Food Writer | San Francisco, CA | 2-Person Household | Living on soup to get over bronchitis | 2009."

Do You Consider Food Art?

The other day while making skewered vegetables for grilling, my girlfriend and I got into an interesting discussion about food being like art. We were determined to make the skewers look as pretty as possible and carefully thought out each vegetable's placement. Presentation of food is important, but do you consider food art?

Make a Salad With Fluxus Dressing

Experimental artist Alison Knowles is planning on serving up one giant salad. Her 1962 Fluxus performance piece, Make a Salad, is being performed at London's Tate Museum. The piece begins with a cellist playing a Mozart concerto, and once the music is completed, Knowles, along with five museum assistants, will begin chopping the salad. The main focus of the piece will then become the chopping sound, which will be amplified by speakers and then relayed around the gallery. When they're done chopping the salad - which will consist of lettuce, cucumber, carrot and tomato and will feed 300 people - it will be placed into a huge vessel and dressed with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and herbs.

Even though it's going to be a big salad - does anyone else think of that Seinfeld episode? - it's not going to be the largest. The Spanish town of Pulpi set the record last September and were then beaten by a community in Israel this past November.

A Whole Latte Beautiful Art

This past weekend, my friends and I found ourselves waiting in line for some tasty coffee. When our orders came up, we each had some cutesy latte art - hearts, leaves, etc. - and it got me wondering about latte art in general. Some baristas really take pride in it and there are many clever designs out there. I recently came across this video that walks you through several different designs, including rabbits and stars. The unknown barista is very inspirational; after watching it, I wanted to give it a try myself!

I Want to Live in a Carl Warner Foodscape

I was checking out some of my favorite websites when I came across these photographs by London based artist Carl Warner. His series called Foodscapes are wonderfully intriguing. Everything in the photos are made completely out of food. The hot air balloons are made with strawberries and garlic, the mountains are made with loaves of bread, trees of broccoli, and houses of cheese. Sounds like my kind of town! If Items Were Made From Meat

We were all pretty intrigued by the artist who uses meat as a medium for wigs, but what do you think of Italian artist Simone Racheli's meat-inspired items? His works, which are made from plastic, iron, wood paper, and wax; and include items such as an iron, a modern chair, and even a toilet. Racheli's work isn't meant to gross folks out, it's meant to bring the items to life, by showing what they're like when you remove their skin and show off their muscles and meat. Hrmm . . . I wonder what a nice cut of chair would taste like?

Julia Kissina's a True Meathead

Berlin-based Russian artist Julia Kissina's early photographs bring a new meaning to the phrase Meathead. In her 1997 series, entitled Feen - which means fairies in German - she shows several young girls and ladies wearing raw meat as wigs. That's right, they're meat hair fairies. I've included several of my faves below, but be sure to check out the entire series. Also worth noting are her series of sculpted ground meat and faces surrounded by meat.
