Vote Tomorrow, Score Free Food

Tomorrow, I'll be finding several ways to celebrate being an American. Obviously, I'm hitting up PartySugar and LibertySugar's election-night bash, but beforehand I'll cash in on some free food.

Present your "I Voted" sticker at Krispy Kreme and receive a sprinkle-studded, star-shaped doughnut at no cost. For a nice breakfast pairing, head to Starbucks, tell them you voted, and you'll get a free 12-ounce cup of coffee. And for dessert, go to any Ben & Jerry's between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to score a free scoop of ice cream.

Despite the fact that some are calling the promotions illegal, I think these freebies are a wonderful way to promote the vote. Plus, what better way to stay peeled to the results than with a delicious bargain?

Summer of Sandwiches: Strawberry & Banana Ice Cream and Nilla Wafers

When I was a kid, one of my favorite desserts was banana pudding with Nilla Wafers. My mom used to make it often, and my siblings and I would chow down on it like there was no tomorrow. I haven't had it in years, but recently someone mentioned Nilla Wafers to me, and they've been on my brain ever since.

So naturally, when it came time to make this week's ice cream sandwiches, Nilla wafers were my first choice. Originally I wanted to make my own banana ice cream, however my ice cream maker wasn't ready. So I picked up a pint of the next best thing - Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey - and headed over to my sister's house.

While there I decided that her strawberry ice cream looked great too, and that a slice of banana would be a nice touch - cut yours thinner than mine so the sandwiches stay bite-sized. The Nilla Wafers were smaller than I remembered them, so I ended up using a melon baller to scoop the ice cream out. I then created a little assembly line - wafer, ice cream dollop, banana, ice cream scoop, wafer - in order to make a bunch to enjoy at once. I then stuck them in the freezer and counted down until dessert time. They made perfect appetizer sized sandwiches, and would make great desserts for a party.

Ben & Jerry's Renames Flavor in Honor of Gay Marriage

Beginning today, a Vermont law recognizing gay marriage goes into effect - and, to celebrate, ice cream company Ben & Jerry's is renaming popular seller "Chubby Hubby." The new name? "Hubby Hubby."

While Ben & Jerry's isn't changing the labels on "Chubby Hubby" pints sold in stores - revising product labels takes 18 months - a wedding-themed truck will hand out free "Hubby Hubby" ice cream across the state today, including at the Vermont capitol. The creamery's six in-state ice cream parlors will also sell limited-edition "Hubby Hubby" sundaes during the month of September.

Still, the company, which has been known to rename its ice cream flavors after liberal causes, hasn't ruled out the idea of retailing "Hubby Hubby" in the future. “The legalization of marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Vermont is certainly a step in the right direction, and something worth celebrating with peace, love - and plenty of ice cream,” Ben & Jerry’s CEO explained.

Ben and Jerry's vs. Haagen-Dazs: A Pint-Sized Battle

There's been some heated public debates between competing brands. The latest two companies to join the feuding? Ice cream giants Haagen-Dazs and Ben and Jerry's. To pay for the high costs of natural and top-quality ingredients, Haagen-Dazs has reduced the size of its pints from 16 to 14 ounces. Despite the decrease in packaging, Haagen-Dazs still calls its container a "pint." Ben and Jerry's is highly offended by this "downright wrong" move, and pledged, in a statement, to provide consumers the same quantity and quality in its product:

One of our competitors (think funny-sounding European name) recently announced they will be downsizing their pints from 16 to 14 ounces to cover increased ingredient and manufacturing costs and help improve their bottom line. We understand that in today's hard economic times businesses are feeling the pinch. We also understand that many of you are also feeling the same, and think now more than ever you deserve your full pint of ice cream.

While I understand that many brands are shrinking their products, I have to side with Ben and Jerry's; it's not fair to call something a pint when it's not one. How do you feel about the debate?

Ben & Jerry's Celebrates 31 Years With Free Cones

If your weather's been unseasonably hot like it is here in San Francisco, you might be looking for ways to stay cool. Look no further than Ben & Jerry's, where tomorrow stores will be giving away free ice cream cones in honor of the chain's 31st birthday.

There's no coupon required: Simply walk into your closest B&J's anytime between noon and 8 p.m., scope out a choice flavor, and be on your merry way.

Now onto important decisions: Shall I stick with the classic Phish Food, or check out the newfangled Mission to Marzipan? What free flavor will you be hitting up?

Tomorrow Is Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's

Ice cream fiends probably don't need to be reminded, but for those of you who don't set your calendars to Ben & Jerry's, tomorrow is their free cone day. They do this in late April/early May each year, but this year it happens to be their 30th birthday. There are no strings attached, you just get in line, order your free cone and walk away a happy ice cream-toting customer. Just be warned, the lines do get quite long, so be prepared for a wee wait.

I'm too lazy to wait in line, but I think I might just go hunt down some Americone Dream. How about you? Are you going to go? If so, what flavor are you going to order up?

You Know You Want Free Burritos and Ice Cream!

Mark your calendars, there is free stuff next week on both Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, April 16th, Chipotle is giving away a free burrito (well free as long as you bring a receipt from a burrito purchased on April 14th or 15th) as part of their "EZing Your Tax Day Pain" campaign. So buy a burrito, get a burrito for free.

The next free day is even better and there are no strings attached. On Tuesday, April 17th, from 12pm-8pm, you'll be able to receive a free cone from all participating Ben & Jerry's scoop shops. But you better get there early, from what I hear (I always miss it) the line can get quite long!
