McDonald's Unveils Global Redesign

Next month, number one fast-food giant McDonald's will unveil a redesign of all its food products around the world. In what the corporation calls "the most comprehensive rollout in the brand's history," all 118 countries with McDonald's restaurants will launch new designs that advertise the chain's high-quality ingredients. The packaging, developed by UK marketing firm Boxer, draws attention to fresh ingredients and preparation: The new Big Mac box includes images of an onion, slices of cheese, a head of lettuce, and a freshly made hamburger, with the words "100 percent beef" and "all-beef patties" inscribed on the box. The containers will hit the US, UK, and Ireland first. Mary Dillon, global chief marketing officer for McDonald's said:

Our new packaging is a fresh way of sharing McDonald's food quality story with our customers. The more people know about our food, the more they'll love it.

Mac Attack! Goat Cheese and Pesto

You love pesto, I love pesto! I have to admit I was giddy when I found a recipe that combines the comfort of mac and cheese with pesto. It also uses another one of my favorites, goat cheese. Since I had already eaten a lot of elbow macaroni, I picked up a box of orecchiette. They are said to be shaped like small ears, but I think they look more like little bowls; a perfect vessel to fill with sauce!

The combination of goat cheese, Parmesan, and pesto is insanely creamy. For a great crunch and texture, the mac and cheese is topped with panko. Rather than make a big pan, I cooked it in easy-to-serve individual ramekins. With a little planning this recipe won't take much longer than a box of Kraft - except it's a million times more rewarding. Cheese Lovers Battle It Out at SF Macaroni Cook-Off

Call it the daddy of all mac-and-cheese battles: Earlier this month, a new group, SF Food Wars, hosted its first-ever event, a macaroni and cheese cook-off. Twenty contenders - and more than 200 eaters - attended the inaugural event, which benefited the San Francisco Food Bank.

Among the cheesy plates of pasta? Bourbon Duck Cheddar Mac 'n Cheese from Beer and Nosh, The Modern Halitosis Lovers' pungent Makeout Mac, and Milo's Macaroni and Cheese from Team Fromage. KKR and Bike Basket Pies took home the big-ticket prize with their Mac & Cheese Pies, which were filled with blue cheese, spinach, shiitakes, and walnuts.

Would You Eat This Mac Snack Wrap?

Try saying this really fast three times: McDonald's is back with the Mac Snack Wrap. What's that, you ask? Simply put, it's the fast food chain's Big Mac wrapped in a soft flour tortilla in place of a hamburger bun. The new menu item is available in all Canadian McDonald's locations, although Eat Me Daily reports that the wraps are also being tested in Houston, Phoenix, Milwaukee, and Michigan City.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm on the fence about this one. On the one hand, I hold a special place in my heart for the flour tortilla. But on the flipside, there are some things that just don't seem to belong inside tortillas - like hamburger patties. What do you say: Is the Mac Snack Wrap a brilliant way to eat on the go, or the most ridiculous idea ever?

Come Party With Me: Election Night - Invite

November 4th, 2008 is possibly the most important day of the year. Since it's such a significant night, no one should sit at home nervously waiting for the next president to be announced. I've joined forces with LibertySugar and together we're hosting a party at a neighborhood saloon called Elixir. Owner and master mixologist H. Joseph Ehrmann has assured me election coverage will be aired. This week I'm sharing my party plan, so you can steal my ideas and host your own political party! To assemble the invite:

Start by creating a new document in Microsoft word. Drop and drag the American flag image into the document.
Insert a text box. Write out the details of the party. I used the font American Typewriter in size 12 to write:

Since I live in San Francisco, I know the majority of my guests are Obama supporters. If you and your friends are partial to McCain change the text to say, "Join us as we Mac-attack the Vote." If your crew is a mixture of both sides, write, "Join us as we celebrate America."
Save the document as a PDF, crop it down to size, and send in an email. Alternately, save the image in an evite or pingg message, and send. For a snail-mailable version, print on thick, white cardstock and send in an envelope closed with an election sticker.

Sorry, No Whopper For You!

How many of you love a big, juicy Whopper? I have to admit, when I was in high school, that was my favorite off-campus lunch treat. There's something about the sauce that just tastes so great. These days I don't eat them that often, but when I'm on a road trip and have to choose between a Big Mac and a Whopper, I always choose the Whopper. Recently, as a publicity stunt, Burger King discontinued the Whopper at one location. They set up cameras and recorded the reactions. Some folks freak the heck out. They've been showing some of the clips in their recent television commercials, and they're absolutely great. They also pranked folks by replacing Whoppers with Big Macs and Wendy's burgers.
