A couple of months ago, I got together with my pals April and Jessie for what I hope is to become a new tradition of ours: hanging out drinking champagne while doing random bits of domestic diva-ry. This time we were doing one of Jessie's specialties: jam - blueberry jam to be exact.
It all came about when I had my housewarming party back in August.

I have been drooling over the cover of the February Bon Appétit cover ever since it landed in my mailbox a few weeks ago. On a stark white background sits a huge stack of whole grain pancakes topped with blueberry syrup. Yesterday evening, YumJimmy and I finally decided to curb our pancake cravings by whipping up our own batch.

Since blueberry season has begun, I couldn't help but go overboard and buy several baskets from my local farmers market. While I enjoyed one basket raw, I used the rest to make these mini blueberry shortcakes with lemon and thyme biscuits.

Although I enjoyed fresh blueberries this past weekend, I know their supply is winding down at the market, which is why I've been searching for ways to prolong their existence at my table. Last Saturday night I attended an opening party for a new exhibit at the de Young museum here in San Francisco. Although you may believe blueberries taste best eaten out of hand or in a scrumptious dessert, don't discount them in savory dishes until you've tried them. If you've never used blueberries in a sauce before, start with a straightforward recipe.
This one pairs just-grilled chicken cutlets with a fresh salsa made of blended blueberries, cilantro, basil, and, of course, jalapeños for a sweet-hot kick.

chin-juicy, sweet, and incidentally, they also happen to be great for you.
