October isn't just National Vegetarian Month; it also happens to be the 25th year that America's celebrated National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I'm all for finding a cure, and being the gourmand that I am, my favorite place to support the cause is in the kitchen. My philosophy? Gather Around Your Mother's Table

We were recently sent a copy of Around My Mother's Table: Stories and Recipes Celebrating Lives Lost to Breast Cancer ($16.95 with some proceeds going to breast cancer initiatives), and thought it might make a great Mother's Day gift. It's a sentimental, if not bitter-sweet book that's been created with lots of love.

Editor and compiler Lisa Burton embarked on the project after losing her own mother to breast cancer. Her journey results in a book mixed with 39 stories and recipes from other daughters and sons who've lost their mothers. Unlike other books like this, it really does seem like a celebration, and if you walk away with a message, it will be to cherish the moment.

If the book seems like a macabre choice, then think of it as an excuse to hang out more often. Order a copy and share it with your mom. Then get together and make the recipes, or write down your own family heirlooms. Something tells me mom won't say no to spending more time with her loved ones.

Do You Purchase Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Products?

The stores are currently loaded with pink products benefiting breast cancer research. For example, KitchenAid carries a huge line of pink products that generate funds for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. What I want to know is, do you purchase these pink products?

PartySugar Behind The Bash: Beats For Boobs

Last Thursday night, I was invited to a fundraiser that kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness month. Put on by the organization Beats For Boobs, the event was a celebration of art, fashion, food, and music with the focus on breast cancer awareness. The annual fundraiser began in 2003 as a reaction to event producer Juliana Cochnar's mother's diagnosis with breast cancer.

The Invite: In flyer form with the image shown at left. It stated that guests wear pink... and lots of it!

The Look: An over the top explosion of all things pink. Tons of fresh, beautiful pink floral arrangements, pink tablecloths, pink ribbons, pink silverware, napkins, etc.

The Menu: A smörgåsbord of scrumptious, slow roasted pork tenderloin chunks; fresh vegetarian spring rolls; sticky sweet barbequed chicken wings; crunchy crudites with creamy dips; cheeses; crackers; and much much more. For dessert they had cupcakes with candies in the shape of nipples for garnish!
The Music: A rowdy mix of remixed hits, bumping beats, and smooth house. To promote feminine empowerment, the DJs were all female.

Invite friends to come over for a cocktail style bash. Create an all pink invite and encourage guests - boys and girls - to come "pinked out." Ask guests to make a donation to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation. When friends arrive, ask them a trivia question that relates to breast cancer knowledge. For example, at what age should you start to get a mammogram? (Answer: 40) Remind guests of the importance of performing a self examination each month.
Decorate with everything pink. Check out your local party supply store. Most will have plenty of breast cancer themed goodies. Streamers, balloons, ribbons, etc. all of it should be in shades of pink. Fill vases with your favorite pink flowers.
Serve a selection of your favorite foods. Offer a little bit of everything from meats to cheeses to crackers, breads, olives, and veggies. Get pink plates, silverware, and napkins.
Play a mix of your current favorite songs and get the party started!

Hershey's Is Thinking Pink!

In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Hershey's Company is producing limited edition versions of some of their popular products: Kisses, Nuggets, Syrup, and Peppermint Patties. They will also contribute $300,000 to the Young Survival Coalition, a non-profit network of breast cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to addressing the concerns and issues unique to young women and breast cancer.

“The Young Survival Coalition is proud to work with Hershey’s powerful brands to raise awareness for our important mission,” said Michele Przypysny, Chief Executive Officer, Young Survival Coalition. “Our partnership with The Hershey Company has helped us to provide vital programs and services for young women and their families.”

The products all have special pink packaging and are designed to help raise awareness. They should be available in stores for the entire month of October.

Fill Your Bagel Craving With a Panera Pink Ribbon Bagel

If you're looking for another way to justify your breakfast bagel, Panera Bread - sort of like Starbucks, but with baked goods - has just released a bagel in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The bagel, which is shaped like a ribbon and called the Pink Ribbon, is made with cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, vanilla, honey and brown sugar. A proceed of each Pink Ribbon bagel sale will benefit various breast cancer charities, including the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization. This is the seventh year Panera has done this promotion, last year they raised almost $200,000 from sales and donations.

Yum's October Must Haves

October is that magical time of the year where the weather starts to change, fall hits us hard and the holidays are just around the corner. It also happens to be National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and - on the lighter side of things - National Cookie Month. To get you prepared for a fabulous October, I've rounded up some great products that you simply must have.

From cookies to cupcakes - aren't these Eleni's Reach for the Cure cookies adorable? - there's something out there for every sweet tooth. If you don't have time to actually bake for the cure, then have someone else do it. This way you can help raise money and awareness, and still shove sweets in your face!
