I consider brownies the perfect barbecue dessert. My standard recipe is similar to most; it contains a whole stick of butter, a couple of eggs and a cup and a half of sugar. Shape magazine recently featured brownies in their new recipe makeover column. I was more than curious and since I was craving chocolate I decided to whip up a batch. It didn't hurt that in making over the brownies, the final calorie count per brownie dropped by 170 calories.

Recently my pal Julie and I got into a debate over which was better: blondies or brownies. In my opinion, nothing can trump a good brownie, but she doesn't agree. After our conversation I realized that even with all of my baking, I was guilty of blondie-discrimination. I've never actually made blondies! A couple of weeks ago, Conde Nast Traveler hosted its 8th Annual Hot List party in New York City. One of the desserts on the menu, which was catered by Mary Guilani, were these jalapeño brownies. I thought they would make an exceptionally original dessert for Cinco de Mayo, so I whipped up a batch and brought them to work. The recipe is simple — it's basically a classic brownie recipe with minced jalapeños folded in — and interestingly complex. The result is a spicy meets sweet flavor explosion. A few weeks ago, I headed out to celebrate a friend's birthday at the Rogue Ales Public House in San Francisco. While there, the group of us drank from the huge selection of beers and noshed on delicious Kobe-style burgers and onion rings. The celebration was a big success, and near the end, my friend's wife pulled out a plastic container full of mini brownie muffins.
